Epöl lies on the eastern edge of the Gerecse Mountains, in a valley between the ridges of Őr-hegy and Babály-hegy. This setting provides a clear sense of the landscape during your stay. When looking for a hotel in Epöl, you can consider which aspect of the destination interests you: geological features, views, or a tour connected with notable people and anniversaries in the community.

Landscape and views in Epöl

The Öreglyuk bedding cave lies on the side of Őr-hegy facing Epöl. It illustrates the main stages in the formation of limestone caves, making it a geological landmark in the local landscape. From the summit of Őr-hegy, you can look out over the Gerecse ridges and the settlements below. The cave and the summit view highlight different features of the same mountain: Öreglyuk illustrates how caves form, while the view takes in the surrounding heights and settlements.

The Kőszikla rock formation on Szarka-berek offers another perspective. From there, the panoramic view extends across the ridges of Gerecse, Pilis, Budai-hegyek and Dunazug. The view from Őr-hegy includes the settlements below, while Kőszikla focuses on a panorama across four named ridges. The two viewpoints can thus be distinguished by the views described.

Tours and activities

The Deák-József Memorial Tour is one of the hiking and cycling tours organized in connection with significant anniversaries or notable people in the community of Epöl. It connects the tour with a local community theme. Paragliding is possible on Palkó-hegy. Together, these examples show different local highlights: a themed hiking and cycling tour and an activity on the mountain.

More to explore in the wider Komorn-Gran destination

In the wider Komorn-Gran destination, the Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet is a nationally significant, individually designated landscape protection area in Komárom-Esztergom. It covers 8,676 hectares. In the Gerecse, alongside the predominant Triassic limestone, there is also Jurassic limestone, which is particularly rich in fossils. Landscape protection and geological history are therefore two distinct nature themes in the wider destination.

Another theme in the wider Komorn-Gran destination is the history of the Camaldolese Order. The Majki Kamalduli Remeteség is a Baroque monument complex with seventeen hermit houses, a church tower and a monastery. An exhibition there covers the general and Hungarian history of the order. The complex is open Tuesday to Sunday: from April 1 to October 31, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and from November 1 to March 31, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Check opening hours before visiting.

The Brigetio Öröksége Látogatóközpont in the wider Komorn-Gran destination offers another historical focus: it houses an interactive permanent archaeological exhibition featuring finds from the excavations at Brigetio. The Monostori Erőd is a military monument within the Komárom fortress system. Exhibitions and staged scenes illustrate the periods of the monarchy, the world wars and the Soviet occupation. The Komárom fortress system, located in the territories of both Komároms, is on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list.

For guidance around the Duna-Gerecse tourism area, 19 virtual walks are available to download in Hungarian, German, English and Slovak; they work offline. Check that the offering is available before planning your trip.
