Komárom-Esztergom: Gerecse, Stud Farm and Fortress History
Accommodation in Komárom-Esztergom
Komárom-Esztergom can be explored through a range of themes: the limestone landscape of the Gerecse, stud farm experiences in Bábolna, archaeological finds and fortress monuments. You can choose your hotel based on the visits that are central to your trip. The landscape and cycling offer different highlights from cultural history and historic architecture.
Landscape and cycling routes
The Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet is a nationally significant, individually designated landscape protection area in Komárom-Esztergom. It covers 8,676 hectares. The Gerecse is shaped primarily by Triassic limestone, with Jurassic limestone also found in the area, particularly rich in fossils. The different rock types give the landscape a geological dimension as well.
For an active way to explore the area, the regional tourism information service recommends a cycling route along the Által-ér, which provides an easy and safe connection between Tata, Vértesszőlős and Tatabánya. The Duna-Gerecse tourism area also offers 19 virtual walks for download in Hungarian, German, English and Slovak, which work offline. As the application's availability may change, it is worth checking before using the walks to plan your trip.
Archaeology, a monastic complex and fortress history
At the Brigetio Öröksége Látogatóközpont, an interactive permanent exhibition presents archaeological finds from excavations at Brigetio. The exhibition connects a visit to the center with the history of the archaeological site. In Komárom, exhibitions and staged scenes at Monostori Erőd illustrate the eras of the Monarchy, the World Wars and the Soviet occupation. The fortress is a military monument within the Komárom fortress system, which lies in the territory of the two Komároms and is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
The Majki Kamalduli Remeteség offers a different way to explore the past. This Baroque monument complex includes seventeen hermit cells, a church tower and a monastery. An exhibition is devoted to the general and Hungarian history of the Camaldolese Order. The architecture and exhibition thus offer different points of focus: both the complex itself and the history of the order are explored here.
Stud farm visits in Bábolna
A guided visit to the Bábolna Nemzeti Ménesbirtok begins with an exhibition on the history of the stud farm and continues in the Ménesudvar. The “Fogat bemutató, ménfelvezetés” program presents four-, five- and two-horse teams; visitors can try these historic means of transport themselves. Two carriages drawn by Shagya Arabian mares are used for the carriage ride to the nearby arboretum. Advance booking is required.
Next to the arboretum are the stud farm's paddocks, where you can see foals with their mothers. This allows you to experience different aspects of a visit: the guided tour covers the history of the stud farm and the Ménesudvar, while the program focuses on horse teams and carriages. When planning your time, the main point to keep in mind is the advance booking required for the carriage ride.
Opening hours and planning
The Majki Kamalduli Remeteség is open Tuesday to Sunday. From April 1 to October 31, it is open from 10:00 to 18:00; from November 1 to March 31, it is open from 09:00 to 17:00. As opening hours may change, check the current schedule before your visit. This will help you fit a visit to the complex and its exhibition into your travel plans.
Whether you prioritize nature, cycling, archaeology, fortresses or stud farm history, first decide which of these themes you want to define your stay, and factor your planned visits into your choice of hotel.
