Pély combines protected natural areas with a remarkable history of water engineering. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between two main themes: landscape and birdlife on the one hand, and historic structures and technology on the other. Cultural traces in the townscape round out this profile.

Natural Environment and Protected Areas

Pély’s salt steppes form a nature reserve within the Hevesi Füves Puszták Landscape Protection Area. They are among its most valuable parts; their character, flora and fauna resemble those of Hortobágy. This comparison provides a concrete point of reference if you take the area’s natural character into account when choosing your destination.

Another natural area is the Pélyi Madárrezervátum (Pély Bird Reserve). It lies in the Tisza floodplain and is a designated area of the Közép-Tiszai Landscape Protection Area. Alongside the salt steppes, it therefore highlights a floodplain landscape with its own protected-area status.

The Pély-Ludas nature trail covers habitat improvements in the Hevesi Füves Puszták Landscape Protection Area, as well as nature conservation objectives, management tasks and challenges. Its subject matter thus encompasses both the habitats and the work involved in protecting and developing them.

Water Engineering History and Townscape

The Sajfoki sluice was built in 1862, and its original commemorative plaque is still visible. The Sajfoki inland water drainage pumping station began operating in 1878 with an English steam pump. In 1879, it was supplemented with Hungarian-made machinery. It was Hungary’s first inland water drainage pumping station, is still operational today, and is considered a valuable part of the country’s water engineering heritage.

The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is another tangible historical trace of Pély. It dates from the 19th century and is the municipality’s only monument. Several artists who supported Pély also enriched the townscape with public sculptures and works of art.

Context Within the Wider Destination of Heves

Within the wider destination of Heves, the Hevesi Füves Puszták Landscape Protection Area covers 16,114 hectares in the southern part of the county. It was designated in 1993 and reached its current size following extensions in 2005 and 2008. This regional context complements Pély’s specific nature-related features with the wider framework of the protected area.

Another distinct natural and historical highlight within the wider destination of Heves is the 6.5 km Ilona-völgyi nature trail along the Ilona stream. It passes geological features of the Eastern Mátra Mountains and traces of former ore mining. The route thus combines geological themes with remnants of mining history.

The Szépasszony Valley is also part of the wider destination of Heves’s cultural offerings. It contains Eger’s largest contiguous area of wine cellars; wine culture and the gastronomy associated with it are important tourist attractions there. Heves embroidery is a textile heritage from Heves County, associated with Heves, Mátraderecske and Bodony.
