Szihalom – Archaeology, Local History and Culture
Accommodation in Szihalom
Szihalom offers several ways to explore local history: archaeological sites, a house with traditional furnishings, places of remembrance and traditional forms of cultural expression. The themes range from interpreting an archaeological site to the construction of an earthen house and the history of local cultural programs.
Archaeology and Everyday History
Árpádvár/Földvár is on the southwestern side of Szihalom. Hungarian archaeology generally classifies the site as prehistoric, and in part also as a site dating from the Hungarian Conquest. These two associations point to different historical periods and give the place an archaeological dimension.
The Tájház at 90 Hunyadi út opened on May 25, 2002, after a year of preparatory work. Its building is an earthen house from the late 19th century. Its traditional three-part layout comprises a room, kitchen and pantry; its features include a timber-frame structure and a domed oven.
The Tájház furnishings present domestic culture and furniture, as well as clothing and kitchen and farming implements. The objects relate to the early 20th century and the 1920s and 1930s. Thus, in a house dating from the late 19th century, architectural features sit alongside depictions of everyday life from later decades. Visitors interested in rural domestic and working life will find several connected themes here, rather than just a single group of objects.
Places of Remembrance, Art and Tradition
The Kálvária is on the northwestern edge of the settlement, beside Route 3 between Füzesabony and Mezőkövesd. It stands on a gently sloping, wooded hillside. On March 15, 2011, a monument was erected there in honor of the founders and heroes of the 1848 Revolution. The site's location and dedication connect this place of remembrance with the landscape and the history of commemoration.
Another art-historical feature can be found in the Roman Catholic church: the main altarpiece depicts the Ascension of Christ and was painted by Ferenc Szoldatics in 1871. The painting is thus identified by both its religious subject and the named artist and year of creation.
The traditional dance group is also part of Szihalom's cultural heritage. Its repertoire includes the traditional Szihalmi lakodalmas in two versions: a longer, all-day form and a shorter version suited to stage performance. The two formats therefore differ mainly in duration and performance setting.
After the Tájház opened, several successful programs celebrating tradition were held for tourist groups and residents. These included a harvest procession and a ball, both revived after more than 50 years; at the time, the intention was to make both traditions again. This account records the intention at the time and makes no claim that the programs are held again today.
The Magyar-Tár-Ház and Its Themes
A report dated January 27, 2017 described the Magyar-Tár-Ház as the result of renovating a former Baroque granary. At the time, the exhibition spanned three floors and combined ethnographic and craft-related themes. Four areas presented the cultural and ethnographic heritage of Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin, covering the Great Hungarian Plain, Transdanubia, Upper Hungary and Transylvania.
The visitor program described in 2017 included the opportunity to explore and try out historical carpentry tools and equipment used for grape harvesting and winemaking in earlier times. Events showcasing folk crafts and craft markets were also held in the courtyard. Tasting traditional foods was another part of the program at the time. These examples show how craft, regional culture and food were brought together there; they describe historical offerings, not a current events calendar.
Regional Context: Heves
The Hevesi Füves Puszták Landscape Protection Area lies in the southern part of Heves County, within the wider destination of Heves. It covers 16,114 hectares, was designated in 1993, and reached its present extent after expansions in 2005 and 2008. These details refer to the protected area in Heves County, not to Szihalom itself.
The wider destination of Heves is also home to the Hevesi szőttes, a textile heritage from Heves County associated with Heves, Mátraderecske and Bodony. In Szihalom, by contrast, the focus is on the local features described here: the archaeological site, the Tájház, the Kálvária, the church painting and the traditional cultural forms. This distinguishes local history from the wider regional context without conflating them.
