In Kökény, you can weigh up several different types of excursions when planning your trip: nearby Dinó Park, Kökényi-tó, the smaller lake in the Malomvölgyi lake system, a walking trail to the remains of the Bagolyvár-kilátó, and a historic chapel. The exhibition, outdoor activities and local history appeal to different interests. Before your trip, you can decide whether you would rather include prehistoric life, a circular trail, a walk with an elevation change, or a historic building.

Dinó Park: Prehistoric life and play area

Nearby Dinó Park is accessible from Road 58: at the sign for Kökény, turn right onto Időjós út. At the park, you can learn about the history of the Earth and palaeontology; the exhibition features life-size dinosaurs. In addition to the exhibition, there is a play area with skill games. The learning exhibits and skill games are therefore two different reasons to include the park in your plans. As road layouts can change, check the route before setting out.

Lakes, circular trail and lakeside facilities

Kökényi-tó, the smaller lake in the Malomvölgyi lake system, lies near Kökény. The full circular trail goes around both lakes. Its renovation was reported in July 2023; a gravel surface was laid along the six-kilometre trail. When planning, you can distinguish between visiting the individual lake as a scenic spot and taking a loop around both lakes.

The bridge by the lake on the Kökény side is used by pedestrians and cyclists; its renovation was reported in July 2023. In 2023, there were fire pits and rest areas on the southern shore of this lake; fire pits were also renovated and newly installed at several locations. Also in 2023, work began to modernise a playground next to the lake. Before your visit, check current trail and bridge conditions, whether the fire pits and rest areas are available, and the condition of the playground.

Walk to Bagolyvár-kilátó

A walking trail from a bus stop in Kökény to the remains of Bagolyvár-kilátó is 900 metres long and has an elevation change of 32 metres. The two measurements provide different points of reference: the distance is just under one kilometre, while the elevation change is a separate factor to consider when planning your walk. Before visiting, check the condition of the lookout and access to it.

Chapel and local history

The Catholic Szent-Kereszt Chapel in Kökény is a historic building dating from 1767. Its construction date provides a historical point of reference alongside the scenic excursion destinations. Unlike Dinó Park, the focus here is not on the history of the Earth and palaeontology, but on a local religious building. If you would like to include different cultural themes in your travel plans, the chapel offers a distinct historical perspective.

Culture in the wider destination of Baranya

In the wider destination of Baranya, Pécs offers further cultural attractions. The Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated tombs from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter includes the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” exhibitions, as well as an exhibition on the history of the family and factory. Archaeological heritage and a variety of exhibition themes thus offer distinct cultural experiences in Baranya.
