Pellérd brings together architecture, archaeological traces and wine. The protected Brázay Castle, numerous historic farmhouses and artisan houses, and finds from several periods give the town a variety of cultural highlights. The Szőlőhegy wine program adds tastings in scenic surroundings. Architecture, history and wine can therefore each offer a different starting point for planning your trip.

Architecture in Pellérd

Brázay Castle was built in the mid-19th century in the Neoclassical style and is protected as a historic monument. The castle park features an artificial grotto designed in the Romantic style. Pellérd also preserves numerous farmhouses with porches and artisan houses in their original condition. Its architectural heritage also includes the Church of St. Margaret and the Chapel of the Holy Cross. Together, these buildings showcase different facets of local architecture, from the Neoclassical castle to the preserved homes.

Finds and historical milestones

Archaeological finds add earlier periods to the architectural history. Objects excavated in 1961 represent Pellérd’s Late Bronze Age heritage, including a small faceted vessel, a fragment of a handled vessel and a spindle whorl. Roman finds came to light during earthworks west of Pellérd; a Roman hoard of 69 pieces was found in the area in 1825. An iron knife and a vessel from the Avar period were found during earthworks beside the Pécsi-víz. Medieval sherds, coffin nails and an ornate censer were uncovered during roadworks near the Roman Catholic church.

Pellérd first appears in a document from 1305 under the name “Pellart.” Also in 1305, the town served as a meeting place for Baranya County. Pellérd had a parish in the 14th century, as documented in papal tithe records from 1332 to 1335. Local topics also include industrial history: Pellérd was the site of Hungary’s first silk-weaving mill.

Wine and getting oriented locally

Pellérd’s wine-growing area covers 60 hectares. Szőlőhegy is a tourism program where visitors can taste wines in scenic surroundings. The wine-growing area and the tasting program are two distinct points of interest: one describes the size of the area, while the other is a tourist offering. The information sign system covers sights within the built-up area and also includes information about guest cellars that welcome visitors.
