Kővágótöttös combines natural features with remarkable historical sites. Hideg-kút, the small Romanesque church and the earthworks of Tót-vár to the north offer different points of reference for understanding the town and its surroundings.

Landscape and Hideg-kút

The administrative boundary of Kővágótöttös also falls within the Nyugat Mecsek Tájvédelmi körzet. Another point of reference in the landscape is Hideg-kút: the spring, enclosed by natural stone, lies in a playground in the Kígyósi-völgy between the two parts of the village. Here, the spring and its distinctive location in the valley come together.

Hideg-kút is a high-yield spring. Its flow rate is around 2 to 20 litres per minute and may vary. The municipality renovated the spring in 2005. Its location, approximate flow rate and renovation year describe different aspects of the site: its setting between the two parts of the village, the natural spring and a specific period in its more recent history.

Church and earthworks

The small Romanesque church in Kővágótöttös was built in the 12th century. It is therefore a notable medieval building. There are no regular opening hours; visits are possible by prior telephone appointment. If you include the church in your plans, please take this visiting requirement into account.

The earthworks of Tót-vár lie north of Kővágótöttös. Together with the church, they offer two distinct local points of reference: a Romanesque church with a clear historical date, and earthworks to the north. For a thematic overview, architectural history and a named landform can thus be considered side by side.

Culture and nature in the wider destination of Baranya

The wider destination of Baranya offers cultural and natural attractions, each with its own focus. In Pécs, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated tombs dating from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian murals. Compared with the Romanesque church in Kővágótöttös, the necropolis dates from a much earlier period; here, the focus is on burial chambers and murals.

The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in Pécs showcases different aspects of the family and factory history. These include the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” exhibitions, as well as an exhibition on the history of the family and the factory. Activities for children include outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramic painting workshop and classes at the Hercules Workshop. The Cultural Quarter thus offers exhibitions and activities side by side, rather than focusing on just one aspect of Zsolnay history.

The Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre near Szaporca combines nature topics with traditional agriculture. It offers an interactive exhibition, a working demonstration farm and three themed educational trails. These provide information about traditional agriculture, the Ős-Dráva Programme and the wildlife along the Drava. The farm area features native Hungarian domestic animals, including Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Huzule horses and old breeds of sheep and poultry. The three trails and the demonstration area thus offer different ways to learn and observe.

The Villány wine cellar row offers another perspective on Baranya: there, you can go from cellar to cellar all year round and sample wines and delicious food. The wider destination of Baranya thus brings together archaeological and art-historical themes, nature education and wine culture. You can distinguish these when choosing your interests from the local focus in Kővágótöttös, where Hideg-kút, the Romanesque church and the earthworks define the topics described.
