Lee-On-The-Solent can be experienced from two distinct perspectives: the coast along the Solent and the history of aviation. This distinction makes it easier to plan your trip: the beach, water activities and England Coast Path are the main coastal attractions; the Hovercraft Museum and the heritage of HMS Daedalus offer a focus on aviation.

Coast, beach and water activities

Lee-on-the-Solent Beach is a pebble beach with views of yachts and ships travelling along the Solent. Behind the beach, a paved path provides access for pedestrians, including people with pushchairs or wheelchairs. There is a children’s playground and a splash park in the waterfront area. As facilities like these may change seasonally or as a result of redevelopment, it is worth checking their current status if they are important to your plans.

The tidal waters of Lee-on-the-Solent are used for swimming, sailing, kayaking, kitesurfing and jet skiing. Conditions and permitted areas may vary. Which of these activities is suitable for your stay therefore also depends on where it can be practised and the local conditions.

Coastal route and getting there

The England Coast Path follows the coastline through Lee-on-the-Solent. From Lee-on-the-Solent, the route runs through Stokes Bay and then inland around the Browndown Military Training Area before reaching Gilkicker Point. The route described therefore includes both a coastal section and an inland stretch. Access through adjacent areas may be subject to local restrictions.

Lee-on-the-Solent can be reached by car, public transport, bicycle or on foot. This allows you to plan your journey according to your preferred way of travelling.

Hovercraft and aviation history

The Hovercraft Museum in Lee-on-the-Solent is the only hovercraft museum in the world. It features interactive exhibits, including a large cross-Channel hovercraft that visitors can board. The museum is located at Seaplane Square on Marine Parade West. The exhibition brings the history of hovercraft to life through a hands-on experience on board.

The heritage of HMS Daedalus

The site of HMS Daedalus was one of only 26 seaplane stations established nationwide for aerial coastal defence during the First World War. Historic buildings include the former seaplane hangars of HMS Daedalus: a rare surviving group of First World War hangars, believed to be the only surviving examples of the Admiralty Type J design in the country.

Another memorial is the Daedalus Commemorative Stone, a carved monument made of solid granite in the Public Viewing Area at Solent Airport Daedalus. It was unveiled on 20 June 2025. If the area is redeveloped, its location should be checked again.

Open space at Solent Airport at Daedalus

The Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Park is a 40-acre open space next to Solent Airport at Daedalus that also benefits visitors. The park includes an aviation-themed children’s playground suitable for people of all ages and abilities. The playground offers a distinct attraction alongside the historical aviation themes and adds to the range of experiences in the area.
