In Milford On Sea, beach areas, the Solent Way, Hurst Castle, and woodland and nature reserves offer different starting points for a stay. When looking for a hotel in Milford On Sea, you can begin planning your trip by considering one question: should the focus be on the coast, history, or wildlife watching?

Beach and coast

The long beach at Milford on Sea has two areas for visitors. One is Hordle Cliff beach; the other is on Hurst Road and is also known locally as Keyhaven beach. At low tide, Hordle Cliff beach is sandy and a sandbank is exposed. The tide is therefore a relevant factor when planning your beach visit.

Hordle Cliff beach has visitor parking, toilets, and a kiosk serving refreshments. Check before you travel whether these facilities are currently available. The Hurst Road beach area has a playground, which may change as a result of alterations. Check its current status before your visit.

Paths and woodland

According to Hampshire County Council, the Solent Way begins in the coastal village of Milford-on-Sea and follows the seafront to Hurst Castle Spit. If you would like to include a coastal path in your plans rather than just one beach area, this route offers a distinct focus.

The Pleasure Grounds is a 14-acre woodland. Footpaths there run alongside Danes Stream, which is part of the Milford on Sea nature reserve. Great Newbridge Copse is an ancient, natural woodland. The routes offer two different landscape settings: the Solent Way follows the seafront, while the footpaths in the Pleasure Grounds run alongside the stream. This makes it easy to choose between the coastline and waterside woodland paths when planning your visit.

History and pottery

According to English Heritage, Henry VIII had Hurst Castle built between 1541 and 1544; in 1648, the fortress held Charles I prisoner. The construction and the later imprisonment took place in different centuries, providing a specific historical context for Hurst Castle. Vinegar Hill Pottery, by contrast, focuses on craft: you can view and buy David’s stoneware in the gallery shop.

Wildlife watching and other routes

At Sturt Pond, the public Bird Hide offers views over the 27-acre local nature reserve. The hide hosts free family events titled “BIRDING FOR BEGINNERS” throughout the year, on the third Saturday of each month from 10 am to 12 pm. Check the current event date before you travel.

The nearby Lymington and Keyhaven coastal reserve is four miles long. Its Keyhaven end can be reached from the village of Milford on Sea via Keyhaven Road and New Lane. In the reserve, you can walk or cycle along the coastal footpath from Keyhaven Harbour to Lymington. Unlike the Solent Way, which begins in the coastal village and leads to Hurst Castle Spit, this footpath connects Keyhaven Harbour and Lymington; you can also cycle along it.
