The Hayling Billy Trail follows the original route of the Hayling Billy Railway. The World War Two Heritage Trail documents Hayling’s role during the war years. For a trip to South Hayling, trails and coastal history are therefore distinct themes to explore. Hayling Island also offers beaches and natural areas, where access and conditions vary depending on the destination.

Exploring the Hayling Billy Trail

The Hayling Billy Trail follows the original route of the Hayling Billy Railway. It is an accessible footpath, cycle path and bridleway. It is also used by birdwatchers and nature observers, runners, and people using mobility vehicles. These different ways of using the trail are part of its character, from nature watching to cycling.

The trail runs from Havant on the mainland to the south of Hayling Island. Several access points lead to the foreshore of Langstone Harbour. The harbour is internationally recognised for its importance to nature conservation and provides a habitat for aquatic wildlife and numerous bird species. Sailing, canoeing and windsurfing are established recreational activities in Langstone Harbour; local permits and safety restrictions apply.

Coast, Beach and Nature

At the southeastern tip of Hayling Island lies Sandy Point Nature Reserve, a mosaic of dunes, heathland, shingle, grassland and scrub. The nature reserve itself is closed to the public. However, the surrounding beach and shingle areas are accessible, offering views of the Solent and the nature reserve. So plan to enjoy the open surroundings and the views, rather than access to the reserve.

Above the high-water mark, Hayling Island’s beachfront is mostly shingle; long stretches of sand lie below it. More than three miles of beach stretch along the island’s Solent-facing coast. Coastal changes can affect beach conditions.

The specific location also matters for swimming plans: Beachlands West is one of Hayling Island’s officially designated bathing waters. At West Beach on Hayling Island, the water is generally shallow at low tide; the beach is considered particularly good for swimming. Check current beach advice and the tide times before swimming.
