Bad Berka offers a variety of reasons to visit: its 11-hectare spa park, walking and cycling routes, and historic sites. When planning your trip, you can think of these highlights in terms of outdoor activities, cultural landscapes and architectural history. This can help you choose what you would like to focus on during your visit.

Spa Park and Outdoor Activities

Bad Berka Spa Park covers 11 hectares. Areas left close to their natural state, with rare flora, sit alongside landscaped grounds. Activities include walks, fitness, water treading and Nordic walking. Bad Berka also has three public Kneipp pools for water treading; check their current status before your visit.

In summer, concerts are held in the spa park’s music pavilion. If you are planning to visit for a concert, take this seasonal focus into account. Walks and the other activities mentioned offer different reasons to visit the park.

Cycle Paths and Routes in the Weimarer Land

For cyclists, Bad Berka is a notable point on the Ilmtal Cycle Route: the town lies exactly halfway along the route, which is certified with four stars by the ADFC. Another option, with a different focus, is the Thüringer Drei-Türme-Weg, which leads to the Paulinenturm in Bad Berka.

In the wider destination of Weimarer Land, this circular hiking trail runs through the protected landscape of the Middle Ilm Valley in southern Weimarer Land. It connects the Paulinenturm near Bad Berka with the Hainturm in Belvederer Forst near Weimar and the Carolinenturm near Blankenhain. Bad Berka is therefore a named point on a route that extends beyond the town.

Tiefengruben: Orchards and Village Culture

Tiefengruben is also part of the municipality of Bad Berka. Its orchards are protected as a historic monument and are recognized as evidence of the region’s former farming landscape. Since 2021, they have been part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage. The circular path through the orchards is designed as an educational trail: it offers insights into how the land was used economically and views of the village.

Another circular route covers 12.5 kilometers from Tiefengruben via München and Bad Berka, returning to Tiefengruben. At the farm shop and cider press in Tiefengruben, you can buy liqueurs, fruit brandies and fruit wines; check opening hours before your visit. The Tiefengruben Blossom Festival offers events and attractions for visitors of all ages. For trip planning, it is advisable to check the current event dates.

Church, Town Hall and Market Square

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Mary in Bad Berka stands on the foundations of the monastery church, which burned down in 1608. In addition to church services, concerts and organ tours are regularly held in the town church. Check current event listings if you would like to plan your visit around one.

A blue-and-gold moon display in the town hall’s gable still shows the phases of the moon. The ensemble of buildings around the market square has been extended and reconstructed, and is protected as a historic area. Together with the history of St. Mary’s, these buildings offer different insights into Bad Berka’s cultural history.
