The World of Museums and Village History

Auerstedt’s world of museums offers insights into the village’s history. The local history museum in the castle displays exhibits on the 1806 Double Battle of Jena and Auerstedt, village life and Thuringian customs. Across the way, the Carriage Museum houses 17 historic carriages from the collection of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, including the wedding carriage of Grand Duchess Maria Pawlowna. The world of museums is currently open to visitors by prior appointment only. Confirm this visiting arrangement before making your plans.

The two buildings have different focuses: the local history museum brings together the historic event, village life and customs, while the Carriage Museum puts historic carriages center stage. This gives you two different ways to explore local history, without limiting the carriage collection to a single occasion.

Memorial Sites Commemorating the 1806 Battle

The Battle of Auerstedt, fought on October 14, 1806, is commemorated by a sandstone plaque on the estate building and three lime trees on a hill. There used to be four lime trees there. During the battle, the estate building served as the Prussian headquarters. The plaque, trees and former function of the building link different forms of remembrance to the same historical event.

In the wider regional area, the Napoleon Hiking Trail connects the sites and battlefields of the Double Battle of Jena and Auerstedt via walking trails, cycling routes and a route for motorists. It offers various ways to explore the battle sites, from hiking and cycling to driving.

Auerworldpalast and Maloca

The Auerworldpalast has stood in Auerstedt since 1998. This sturdy circular structure, made from local willow branches, has a diameter of 25 meters. It serves as a nature-inspired, multifunctional venue for events and communication. Full-moon celebrations are held there during the summer months. This building stands out for its construction and use as an event venue, while the museums present collections and history.

Auerstedt’s visitor attractions also include the Maloca, a modern wooden building in a South American architectural style. Together, these two buildings showcase contrasting styles: a circular structure made from willow branches and a wooden building in the South American style.

Annual Festivals

Annual festivals and traditions include the Bakehouse Festival on the first Saturday in January, the raising of the maypole on April 30, and the fair on the weekend after June 14. The Auerworld Festival follows in summer, on the last weekend in July. Oktoberfest takes place on the first weekend in October, and Halloween on October 30. If a particular date is important for your trip, check it with the organizers in advance.

Cycling Routes Around Auerstedt

Auerstedt is located directly on the Saale-Unstrut-Elster Cycling Loop and has direct connections to the Saale Cycle Route and the Ilmtal Cycle Route. The routes offer cycling trips through picturesque landscapes, giving you several connections to choose from when planning your ride.
