For planning a stay in Viernau, the Forest Nature Trail, travel options and Gagen Carnival provide practical guidance. This lets you factor nature, transport and an annual local event into your plans. More cultural and nature attractions can be found in the wider destination of Steinbach-Hallenberg; these are separate destinations and should not be confused with the attractions in Viernau.

The Viernau Forest Nature Trail

The Viernau Forest Nature Trail runs through the Viernau Forest, starting and ending in Viernau. The route is 1.8 km long, takes about 40 minutes to walk and has an ascent of 48 m. The distance, approximate duration and elevation gain give you different points of reference for fitting the walk into your day. Information boards provide details about native trees, woody plants and shrubs, as well as botanical topics such as growth forms and uses. The trail combines a walk through the forest with an opportunity to learn about native plants and their different forms.

Hallenburg Castle and the Unterlautenberg wildlife enclosure offer other distinctive attractions. Hallenburg Castle was built around 1212 on older remains. A walk up offers views of the town and surrounding mountains; you may need to collect the key from the tourist information office to access the tower. The wildlife enclosure is in the district of Unterschönau. Red deer, fallow deer, mouflon and goats can be seen there, and a circular trail of about 3 km runs alongside the enclosure.

KnĂĽllfeld is considered the hiking plateau of Steinbach-Hallenberg. During the summer holidays, horse-drawn carriage rides there and back to the town centre are regularly offered in cooperation with Fuhrbetrieb Falk Nattermann. The ride offers views of the valley and the surrounding mountains. Dates are published in the events calendar; check it if you would like to plan a ride.
