Discover Hümpfershausen
Accommodation in Hümpfershausen
Hümpfershausen is part of the Thuringian Rhön. Berghäuschen am Hahnberg, local leisure attractions and the distinct destinations in the wider travel destination of Wasungen offer different starting points for planning your trip.
Berghäuschen on Hahnberg
Near Hümpfershausen is Berghäuschen on the 652-metre-high Hahnberg. It was built and used as a ducal hunting lodge. After extensive construction work began in the 1990s, it quickly developed into a special excursion destination. The building’s historic use and its later development as an excursion destination therefore come together here.
At Berghäuschen, there is a small shepherd’s wagon, sheep-shaped spring riders, a photo wall and interactive learning boards featuring the voices of the Rhön. These elements were installed as part of a project that ran from July 2023 to February 2024. Alongside the history of the building, you will also find project activities offering different ways to engage, from the photo wall to the interactive boards.
Refreshment service hours at Berghäuschen are listed for Sundays from May to October, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check before you travel whether refreshments will be available on the day of your visit.
Leisure and route connections in Hümpfershausen
Hümpfershausen has a public children’s playground. The village is also one of the places along the Vorderrhönweg. These offer different points of interest for planning: the playground as a leisure spot in the village, and the Vorderrhönweg as a route connection.
Wasungen as a wider travel destination
The Forest Botanical Garden is located in the wider travel destination of Wasungen. Across around 5 hectares, it is home to 162 genera of woody plants, with 1,700 different species and varieties. Paid guided tours with a specialist guide are available by prior reservation. Alternatively, Circular Hiking Trail 1 loops around the garden. This means you can consider a tour booked in advance and a named circular route as two different ways to explore the garden.
Other Wasungen routes also have clearly named destinations: Circular Hiking Trail 2 loops around the Rupperg to the Kleine Zehn Buchen, while Circular Hiking Route 3 loops around the Mordtal to the Oberwallbachsmühle. A section of the Heinrich Cotta Hiking Trail leads from the Forest Botanical Garden to Heinrich Cotta’s birthplace in Kleine Zillbach. These named destinations give you a concrete point of reference when exploring the hiking trails in Wasungen.
Wasungen’s cultural context includes its historic town centre, which is protected as an ensemble and designated as a historic monument area, and the annual Wasungen Carnival. Its highlight is a historic parade on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday; the exact date therefore depends on the carnival calendar. There are also distinct options for hiking and cycling: the 96-kilometre long-distance hiking trail HWO2 connects Wasungen with Schlitz. The Werratal Cycle Path runs along the left bank of the Werra through Wasungen. The Wasungen area therefore offers a long-distance hiking trail linking two named places and a cycle path with a described route along the river.
Focus for your accommodation search
When searching for a hotel, you can start by choosing the focus of your trip: in Hümpfershausen, the main attractions are its location in the Thuringian Rhön, Berghäuschen and local leisure options; Wasungen has its own garden, hiking, cultural and cycling themes. Keep these location-specific points separate when planning your trip. The listed seasonal Sunday hours at Berghäuschen and the annual date of the Wasungen parade, which is tied to Ash Wednesday, can help with your timing.
