Unterschönau: History, half-timbered architecture and wildlife enclosure
Accommodation in Unterschönau
Unterschönau combines local history, architectural heritage and nature experiences. The Hohe Brücke and the Peter and Paul Church offer different historical perspectives; the wildlife enclosure adds the opportunity to observe animals. If you are looking for a hotel, you can decide whether to focus your stay more on history, architecture or nature. The wider destination of Steinbach-Hallenberg offers additional cultural attractions and excursion ideas.
Local history and architectural heritage
Unterschönau was first mentioned in a document in 1362. The Hohe Brücke, a stone arch bridge, stands in the town center. French pioneers in Napoleon’s army built it in 1807/1808. The Peter and Paul Church was built in 1900 in the Henneberg-Franconian half-timbered style. Local history therefore encompasses several different points in time: the first documented mention came well before the two buildings, while the bridge and church belong to different eras and architectural styles. The bridge represents stone arch construction, while the church exemplifies the Henneberg-Franconian half-timbered style; both complement the early documentary record with tangible architectural history.
Wildlife enclosure and seasonal planning
One nature attraction is the Unterlautenberg wildlife enclosure in the district of Unterschönau. Red deer, fallow deer, mouflons and goats can be seen there; the animals on offer may change over time. The variety of animal species provides a different focus from the history of the bridge and church. The seasonal opening period for the path through the wildlife enclosure on the Lautenberg is from April to August; check access before your visit. A farm shop in the surrounding area sells game products made in-house. Ask about opening hours in advance if you plan to shop there.
More experiences in the wider destination of Steinbach-Hallenberg
In the wider destination of Steinbach-Hallenberg, you can visit original workshops at the Metalworking Museum and see how people worked in the past. The museum includes three historic workshops: a nail forge, a corkscrew workshop and a file-making workshop. The workshops bring different trades to life. The permanent exhibition “Ons Schdaaimicher,” which opened in January 2022, offers insights into the way of life, language development and club life of the people of Steinbach-Hallenberg. From April to October, blacksmithing demonstrations take place at the Metalworking Museum on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Check the specific dates before your visit.
A circular trail about 3 km long runs alongside the Unterlautenberg wildlife enclosure in the district of Unterschönau. The Hallenburg was built around 1212 on older structural remains. A walk up to the Hallenburg offers views of the town and the surrounding mountains. You may need to collect the key from the Tourist Information office to access the tower. It is centrally located in the town center, directly opposite the Metalworking Museum.
During the summer holidays, regular horse-drawn carriage rides to Knüllfeld and back to the town center are offered in cooperation with the Falk Nattermann transport company. The ride offers views down into the valley and of the surrounding mountains; Knüllfeld is considered a hiking plateau in Steinbach-Hallenberg. Dates are listed in the events calendar. Check the published dates if you are planning a ride. Free parking is available for longer stays on Bismarckstraße or on Hennebergstraße behind the town church. In honor of the Hallenburg, the Burgfest is celebrated as a major town festival every five years.
