When choosing a hotel in Sylt-Ost, your travel interests can help you decide: Morsum Cliff puts geology and coastal scenery center stage, while Wadden Sea trails, cycling routes and historic sites offer different perspectives. The places and paths provide varied ways to experience nature and history.

Morsum Cliff: Geology and coastal scenery

Morsum Cliff is one of Schleswig-Holstein’s oldest nature reserves. Its exposed layers of earth represent an unusually long geological timespan for the state: ten million years. So, if you are interested in how the landscape formed, this is a place where you can connect directly with the history of the Earth.

The nature reserve’s network of trails allows visitors to experience a largely unspoiled stretch of coastline with cliffs, a natural beach, beach ridges, salt marshes and towering dunes. The geological layers and varied coastal forms bring together two related points of interest: the long history of the Earth and the landscape that unfolds along the trails.

Cycling tours and village trails

The “Tour through green Sylt East” is 32.48 kilometers long, of moderate difficulty and requires a moderate level of fitness. It is designated for e-bikes. The route follows the dike through the traditional Frisian villages of Morsum and Keitum. Along the way, you can visit Morsum Cliff Nature Reserve. Check the route details before setting out, as specifications may change.

In Archsum, extensive cycling tours pass through salt marshes and along the dike. This offers a different focus on the landscape than the circular tour: here, the salt marshes and dike define the cycling experience described. Beside Tinnum Castle, a wooden boardwalk passes the green rampart and leads to a gravel path that goes to the beach and Westerland. Different types of routes are therefore in focus: a circular ride between villages, cycling tours through salt marshes and a path beside Tinnum Castle.

Wadden Sea trail and the history of Munkmarsch Harbor

The Wadden Sea trail between Munkmarsch and Keitum starts at Munkmarsch Harbor and runs above the water along the Wadden Sea. Crossing a small bridge and passing woods and thatched-roof houses, it continues to the edge of Keitum. The route combines views of the Wadden Sea with several distinct landscapes and village scenes along the way.

Munkmarsch Harbor also played a historic role in travel to Sylt. Before the railway embankment opened in 1927, tourists arriving on Sylt came through the harbor and continued to the seaside resorts by horse-drawn carriage or, later, by the island railway. Today, the harbor is also the starting point for the Wadden Sea trail. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between exploring the harbor’s history and following the route along the Wadden Sea.

Keitum adds to the nature-focused experiences with guided Wadden Sea walks connected to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wadden Sea and professionally guided birdwatching tours. If you plan to join one of these tours, check the dates in advance.

Archaeological traces and Sylt’s past

Remains of megalithic tombs can be seen in the southern meadows of Archsum; information boards explain the archaeological background of the ancient burial mounds. The Uthlande Expedition: Sylt East – In the Footsteps of the Past includes fourteen stops, or “moments,” along its route, exploring Sylt’s past and geological origins. Together, these places and stops offer different points of interest for travelers curious about archaeology or the island’s history.

The former Sylt-Ost area comprised the five villages of Archsum, Keitum, Morsum, Munkmarsch and Tinnum. In 2009, it joined Westerland and Rantum to form the Municipality of Sylt. This historical context helps explain why experiences here are associated with several place names and cover topics ranging from coastal scenery to village history.
