Munkmarsch lies between marshland and the Wadden Sea; the district is situated above the steep coast. The small harbour is located at the northern end of the FFH area. The area around the town offers mainly opportunities for walks through the coastal and tidal landscape. The beach, harbour and traces of history give the place different facets and help you choose Munkmarsch as a destination based on your interests.

Beach and coastal landscape

The east beach lies on the eastern side of Sylt in a sheltered bay. Munkmarsch has a small stretch of fine sandy beach here. From there, you can enjoy far-reaching views, including of Rantum Harbour. The beach and its views therefore offer a different focus for your stay than walks through the coastal and tidal landscape around the town.

The White Cliff of Braderup lies between Munkmarsch and Braderup. It is a viewpoint and also a starting point for walks. The surroundings can therefore be viewed both from the small beach and from elevated vantage points; plan to visit each as a destination in its own right.

Harbour and history

Munkmarsch Harbour once played an important role in travel from the mainland: until the Hindenburg Dam opened in 1927, it served as the gateway to the island for travellers. The harbour lost this significance after the opening. The historic ferry house still bears witness to the ferry harbour’s heyday; a mill can also still be seen in Munkmarsch.

Today, the harbour is a private marina and a popular destination for recreational sailors. Marina regulations may change. Several walking and cycling paths are located near the harbour and lead through Sylt’s landscape. The harbour thus brings together maritime life today, routes through the surrounding area and the older history of ferry traffic.

Bridge and mudflat path

The LĂĽgenbrĂĽcke is a small bridge between Munkmarsch and Keitum. It can only be reached on foot from either town and keeps your feet dry during floods. Its name comes from a local tale: according to legend, the unstable predecessor would collapse if children lied while crossing it. The story is part of the lore surrounding the bridge; its practical function is a separate matter.

Sailing and water sports

A youth sailing group meets at the Sylt Sailing Club in Munkmarsch. The club has acquired Optimist dinghies, sailing dinghies and a Hobie Cat 16 for the youth group; the equipment currently available may change. Calle’s Beach, home to the island’s oldest water sports centre, is right next to Munkmarsch Harbour.

In Munkmarsch Bay, Calle Schmidt offers catamaran and dinghy surfing and sailing courses. As course availability may change, it is advisable to check current availability if you are interested.
