In Rantum, the fine-sand West Beach on the North Sea and the Wadden Sea on the eastern side are close to each other. The Rantum Basin nature reserve is also nearby, providing feeding and resting areas for tens of thousands of birds. At the island’s narrowest point, the open sea and the Wadden Sea are only around 600 metres apart. Rantum also offers 9 kilometres of North Sea beach for long beach walks.

Birdwatching and experiencing the Wadden Sea

The Rantum Basin is open to visitors year-round; check the latest access information before your visit. A circular dike path of about 9 kilometres around the basin lets you experience the nature of the protected area and observe birds almost undisturbed. The path thus connects two particular highlights: the landscape of the basin and its resting and feeding areas.

A different perspective is offered by an approximately 1.5-hour mudflat hike in the Rantum mudflats. Along the way, you can discover the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and its inhabitants, such as mussels, snails, lugworms and small crabs. While the circular dike path invites you to watch birds at the basin, the mudflat hike focuses on the mudflat habitat and its inhabitants. Check the dates for the mudflat hike in advance.

Routes through Rantum

The “Best of Rantum” tour leads from Rantum harbour, at the edge of the Rantum Basin, to West Beach, then through the village centre, past the Wadden Sea and along the dike back to the harbour. It can also be started at the Rantum, Campingplatz stop on SVG bus route 2. If you would like to start there, check the latest bus route information in advance.

Another route is the “Through the Rantum Dunes” circular tour. It leads through the “Rantum Dunes” nature reserve. Runners can take part in “RUN ums Rantumbecken”: this route is about 10 kilometres long and goes around the Rantum Basin, a nature reserve on Sylt. If you are planning to take part, check the latest event information.

Harbour and getting your bearings

Rantum harbour is in the eastern part of the village on the Wadden Sea and is a leisure harbour for yachts and motorboats. It dries out at low tide. So if you want to visit the harbour at a particular time, factor the tide level into your plans.
