Two themes help put Witzhave in context when planning a trip: the landscape along the Bille and Corbek rivers, and the former church, which is officially referred to as a chapel. If you are looking for a hotel in Witzhave, these natural and cultural features provide a concrete starting point for choosing your destination.

Natural landscape along the Bille and Corbek

The Billetal nature reserve covers approximately 176 hectares along the Bille and Corbek rivers between Reinbek and Grande. The “Corbek, Brunsteichbach and Brunsbach” landscape conservation area extends along the Corbek between Rausdorf and Witzhave. Its watercourses and the adjoining margins define the character of the protected area. Wet woodlands and grassland predominate in the lowlands, giving way to a small-scale agricultural landscape divided by hedgerows.

The Bille has been designated a nature reserve because of its near-natural habitat. This habitat supports plants and animals, including endangered fish species. Just beyond Witzhave, the Corbek flows into the Bille. The confluence marks the boundary between Stormarn and the Duchy of Lauenburg district, as well as the entrance to the Sachsenwald forest.

The Billetal can be reached via the Witzhave exit on the A24. From Ohe, you can drive to the DoktorbrĂĽcke car park; the signposted Bille hiking trail is easy to reach from there. This provides a specific starting point and a named hiking trail without specifying a walking time.

Local history and the chapel

The place name also has a history: it evolved from Witeshave through Witzhaffen, Witzhöff and Witzhage to its present form, Witzhave. This sequence shows how the spelling changed over time. Witzhave’s coat of arms features a gold fibula—another distinctive motif in the village’s history.

The former church in Witzhave is officially designated a chapel. A description from 2014 and 2015 lists the building’s capacity as approximately 120 seats and mentions concerts, readings, exhibitions and film screenings among the chapel’s uses. If you are planning a visit, please check current uses and event dates.

When choosing a destination, different interests therefore come together: the protected areas and watercourses for nature, and the chapel and coat of arms for local history and culture. These specific themes can help you decide whether Witzhave suits your travel plans.

Stormarn as the wider setting

Stormarn lies in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region between Hamburg and Lübeck and is well suited to day trips. The region’s landscapes include extensive woodland and moorland. The district has numerous short and long circular hiking trails, as well as the Stormarn Trail and the Way of St. James. Regional cycling options include more than 20 circular routes and rail-trail routes along disused railway lines. While the Bille and Corbek rivers define the local natural setting, the hiking and cycling routes offer a wider view of Stormarn as a whole.
