Forest and moor landscapes shape Hammoor’s local character. Several larger landscape areas connect the town with neighboring municipalities; their varied land and habitats offer practical starting points for planning your trip.

Forest and Moor Landscapes

The 51-hectare Nördlich Tiergarten area is shared by Hammoor and Ahrensburg. Rehbrook covers 49 hectares and is connected with Hammoor, Lasbek and Tremsbüttel. The 159-hectare Beimoor/Forsttiergarten area includes land in Hammoor, Ahrensburg, Großhansdorf and Todendorf. The size and boundaries of these areas make clear that each landscape extends across several municipalities.

Hammoor’s landscape includes a former raised bog with diverse secondary vegetation in a varied, partly extensively managed lowland meadow area. Rehbrook’s overarching conservation objective is to maintain a near-natural forest on a historic woodland site, a relief-shaped mosaic of different forest communities, and habitat for the great crested newt. For Beimoor/Forsttiergarten, the conservation objective highlights relatively near-natural wet forests of different types. Nördlich Tiergarten is characterized by predominantly acidic forests and beech forests, as well as shallow excavation ponds bordered by wet forests and alder-ash forests.

Cycling Route, Historic Building and Cuisine

The ADFC cycling tour “Through the Beimoor Forest” runs from Bargteheide via Hammoor and the Beimoor Forest to Ahrensburg and Delingsdorf. If you have a specific event in mind, check the date in advance.

An entry dated February 1, 2021, in the Stormarn monument register lists the building at Hauptstraße 17 as a “cottage with a stable extension”; the entry is marked for a later update. It provides a specific historical reference point without extending the designation beyond what the entry states.

The Klassenzimmer restaurant and café combines modern cuisine with ingredients from Schleswig-Holstein. If this culinary focus matters to your plans, check the current menu.

Stormarn as a Broader Travel Destination

In the broader travel destination of Stormarn, cycling and cultural heritage are also key themes alongside the landscapes. Stormarn lies in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region between Hamburg and LĂĽbeck and is well suited to day trips. Its extensive forest and moor landscapes complement a range of nature experiences that includes nature reserves, nature trails, a barefoot path and opportunities for birdwatching.

Stormarn’s cycling options include more than 20 circular routes as well as BahnRadWege, which follow the routes of three former railway lines through the district’s landscapes. For culture lovers, Ahrensburg Castle offers its own historical connection: it was completed in 1585 and has served continuously as a museum since 1955.

Another example in the broader travel destination is Reinfeld. There, the “Around Herrenteich” nature trail is a four-kilometer circular route with 16 stops directly along the edge of the “Oberer Herrenteich” nature reserve. In the 12th century, Cistercian monks created Herrenteich as an artificial pond by damming the Heilsau for fish farming. These regional examples complement Hammoor’s landscape and cultural themes with other distinct destinations in Stormarn.
