Breitenburg offers everything from castle history and forest and dune landscapes to golf and canoeing on the River Stör. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, the activities you have planned can help you decide where to stay. Keep in mind that the castle grounds are accessible only by prior appointment; schedules and trail conditions should also be factored into your specific plans.

Breitenburg Castle: History and Special Rooms

The castle grounds are among the oldest surviving estates in Schleswig-Holstein. The present-day castle developed from a farmstead that monks from Bordesholm built on an elevated Geest site in the marshes in the mid-12th century. It acquired its current L-shaped form in the 19th century. The chapel also holds a special place: it is one of the first Protestant castle chapels in Holstein.

The history of the well in the castle courtyard dates back to 1592; it took its present form in 1627. The draw well is described as one of the most beautiful in Schleswig-Holstein. Among the notable rooms and collections at this regionally significant attraction are the Hall of Mirrors, the Knights’ Hall, the picture gallery, the old chapel, the crowned castle well, the Thorvaldsen Gallery and the library. The grounds thus offer various ways to explore their history and features.

The castle can be entered only by prior appointment, as it is still inhabited by the aristocratic family. Before your trip, check whether you can arrange a visit. This way, you can plan your stay around a possible castle visit rather than counting on being able to enter spontaneously.

Forest Trails, Dunes and Views

Breitenburg Forest is a gently rolling, wooded area suitable for walks and relaxation. Several regional trails connect Breitenburg, Münsterdorf and Oelixdorf and are suitable for hiking and cycling. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they may change with the weather or maintenance work.

The Binnendünen Nordoe nature reserve extends across Breitenburg, Kremperheide and Dägeling. Its landscapes include inland dunes, open pioneer vegetation on sand, heathland, grassland and oak forest. An established network of paths offers opportunities to enjoy nature and spend time outdoors. The Nordoe Temple, a historic monument dating from the late 16th century, also stands near Breitenburg. It sits on a small hill and offers wide-ranging views over the surrounding landscape.

Golf, Cycling and Paddling

The Golf-Club Schloss Breitenburg is located between Breitenburg Castle and Münsterdorf. Its course has 27 holes and runs through the marshes, Geest and hills of Schleswig-Holstein. Tree-lined avenues, hedges and moors are also part of the course landscape. Golf therefore offers a distinct focus for trip planning alongside history and nature.
