Accommodation in Hohenlockstedt
When looking for a hotel in Hohenlockstedt, local attractions can shape your travel plans: the town’s history, routes through former training grounds, nature along the Rantzau and at Lohmühlenteich, and regional food experiences. You can tailor your stay to the interests you want to focus on during your trip.
Local History at the Water Tower
The local history museum is housed in a historic pump house next to the water tower, which is a listed monument. It presents the town’s history and Hohenlockstedt’s former identity as Lockstedter Lager. The museum also covers the settlement of the former artillery training ground. In addition, it commemorates Hohenlockstedt’s traditional ties with the Finnish Jägers. These topics lead from the town’s history to traces of its former military use.
Built in 1900, the water tower is considered a landmark of Lockstedter Lager. Visitors can climb the tower and look out over the surrounding Geest landscape from a height of about 18 metres. This historic site offers two different perspectives: the town’s history in the local history museum and views across the Geest from the tower.
Historic Routes and Cycling Trails
The Imperial Training Ground Tour starts at the museum by the water tower and follows a hiking and cycling route across the former Lockstedter Lager training grounds. Along the way, it passes nine historic military training sites, including bunkers. Information boards in German and Finnish explain the sites, and the route is signposted. One section follows the Ochsenweg through the Rantzau Valley, a protected FFH site. The tour thus connects the history of the former training grounds with a stretch through the protected valley.
Another cycling option is the Meadows and Forest Tour. It is about 25 kilometres long, passes through Hohenlockstedt and follows traces of its history. The route mainly uses paved roads and quiet streets. Unlike the Imperial Training Ground Tour, which specifically passes former military training sites, this route focuses on the course through Hohenlockstedt and the historic traces along the way.
Nature along the Rantzau and at LohmĂĽhlenteich
The renaturalised Rantzau Valley provides a habitat for many rare animal and plant species and is characterised by its wooded surroundings. One section of the Imperial Training Ground Tour is particularly relevant when planning an outing: it follows the Ochsenweg through the Rantzau Valley, a protected FFH site. The protected landscape is therefore a specific part of the route, not its entire course.
LohmĂĽhlenteich lies about 1.5 kilometres west of Hohenlockstedt in a protected landscape area. The pond has a designated bathing area, a sunbathing lawn, wooded surroundings and a 1,000-metre nature trail. Admission and parking are free; there are also motorhome pitches and a kiosk. The bathing area, sunbathing lawn and nature trail offer different ways to enjoy a visit to the pond.
Food Experiences and Guided Activities
At Meierhof Möllgaard, the demonstration dairy shows how cheese is made. The farm shop offers up to 90 cheese specialities from 25 mostly small farm dairies. Fischzucht Knutzen sells fresh and smoked fish, as well as other fish specialities, in its farm shop. Fischzucht Knutzen’s traditional carp ponds are an excursion destination for anglers and others seeking recreation.
Bernd’s Kartoffelhof explains potato varieties and its own growing process, from harvesting to the table. The farm shop sells potatoes bearing a quality mark, as well as other regional products. Lichtzentrum SaSha offers sensory experiences centred on herbs, meditation, feng shui and ecological building. These topics complement the historical and natural highlights with insights into food, cultivation and other activities.
Hohenlockstedt erleben offers themed visits and guided tours with tastings, snacks or full meals. It also has an accessible rest stop for short programmes and refreshments.
