Wilster: Town History, Water and Cycling
Accommodation in Wilster
Wilster brings together town history, water and cycling. This gives you a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: historic points of interest in town, activities along the Wilsterau and markets held on set days of the week. The wider Steinburg travel destination also offers regional cycling opportunities.
History, the Town Hall and municipal rights
Wilster’s history can be traced back to 1163. In 1282, the town was granted Lübeck town rights; Wilster is also considered one of the oldest towns in Schleswig-Holstein. Another historic landmark is the Old Town Hall, built as a Renaissance-style new building in 1585. The dates mark different aspects: early town history, municipal rights and architectural history. If you are interested in the town’s development, the Town Hall offers a tangible architectural point of reference, while the dates 1163 and 1282 broaden the perspective beyond a single building.
A drainage mill also offers visits and talks; it is considered the last functioning drainage mill in northern Germany. This adds a different focus alongside the Town Hall. Check in advance about visiting and attending talks if you want to make this a firm part of your itinerary.
Water and cycling
Wilster combines a historic town centre with nature and water, and offers experiences and excursions related to cycling. There is access infrastructure for canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) on the Wilsterau: this includes an access point on Hans-Prox-StraĂźe near the stadium and five modernised entry and exit points along the river. These details identify specific spots for water activities, while cycling offers another focus for excursions.
In the wider Steinburg travel destination, cyclists can choose from three day tours in the Wilstermarsch. Along the routes, around 20 experience stations explore regional and historical themes. In addition, five long-distance cycle routes pass through the Steinburg district, including the Elbe Cycle Route. This regional route information complements Wilster’s cycling offerings without specifying a particular route. When planning, also check the conditions on each route.
Market dates and regional offerings
The weekly market takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at Colosseumplatz. Market arrangements may change on public holidays or during major events; check the date if the market is a key reason for your trip. This lets you plan your visit to the weekly market deliberately rather than assuming a particular day will work.
The farmers’ market has a different focus: demonstrations of old agricultural machinery, traditional ring riding and performances by local clubs are part of the event, along with stalls selling produce, dairy products, meat, sausages and handicrafts. The format may vary from one edition to another. Unlike the weekly market, which takes place on set days, this is an event whose format can change.
Travelling by train
Wilster is served hourly on the Hamburg–Westerland railway line. If you are travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel date before setting off. This allows you to take the connection into account when planning, without confusing it with the visiting arrangements for the markets or drainage mill.
