Borsfleth: Cycling Routes and Historic Village Church
Accommodation in Borsfleth
The Elbe, the Stör and the Kremper Au flow through Borsfleth. The village combines its connection to the water with a long church history and opportunities for cycling, hiking and canoeing. When choosing a hotel destination, you can first decide whether historic village features or routes and activities on the water should be the focus of your stay.
Village Character and Arrival
The old Verlath lock and its bridge over the Kremper Au mark the village entrance. One of the last brick-paved streets in Steinburg district also runs through the church village. Both features give the village its distinctive character: the lock and bridge reflect its connection to the water, while the brick street offers a historic streetscape.
St. Urban’s Church and Historic Details
St. Urban’s Church was first documented in 1307. Its 40-meter-high tower was built in 1899. The dates mark different milestones: the church’s early written record and the later construction of the tower.
The church’s oldest furnishings include a Romanesque granite baptismal font. The carved oak pulpit dates from 1638 and was made in the workshop of Jürgen Heitmann in Wilster; it was donated by the Möller family. The church also houses an Ecce Homo painting from the former Baroque altar, dating from 1646.
Another work of art in the altar area is A Picture for Peace, created in 1983 by Borsfleth painter Kokemüller. South of the church stands the thatched parsonage dating from 1816, a Husmanshus or Krüzhus. The church’s historic surroundings therefore include another dated building as well as its furnishings.
Cycling, Hiking and the Water
Guided cycling routes pass through meadows and fields. The Mönchsweg also runs through Borsfleth. Another named option is the 46-kilometer Stör-Törn, which follows the Stör dike through the village. These details offer different planning points: scenery, a route and a specifically stated total distance.
Those who prefer to explore on foot will find rural hiking trails along the dikes and through the Stöpen. Canoeing is offered on the Elbe and the Stör in Borsfleth. There is also a purpose-built marina operated by SSVB. Cycling, hiking and water activities are different themes you can use to shape your stay.
