Norderstedt combines nature trails, water-based activities and cultural venues. The city offers circular walking routes, a network of cycle paths, and swimming at the ARRIBA Erlebnisbad and the Stadtpark Strandbad. The places and routes below offer some specific ideas.

Nature trails for walking and cycling

Norderstedt offers circular nature trails for walks and hikes, as well as a network of cycle paths. The routes can be distinguished by their length and nature themes. The circular route in Alsterland is 13 kilometres long and includes 26 nature experience stations. They focus on animals and plants in hedgerows, forests and the Glasmoor.

The circular route in the Tarpenbek lowlands is eight kilometres long and has 17 nature experience stations. The focus is on bats, insects and birds in areas around water and the edge of residential areas. By comparison, the Alsterland circular route is longer and has more stations; the Tarpenbek lowlands route places particular emphasis on wildlife around water and residential areas.

As an additional hiking option, the approximately ten-kilometre Moor-to-Moor hiking loop passes through the northeast of Norderstedt. It complements the themed routes. The seven-kilometre Sound Trail can be used on foot or by bike. Along the way, 13 sound installations combine movement with explanatory information boards. The trail is accessible and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchair users. If you require specific assistance, confirm the details in advance; also check local access conditions before setting out.

City Park and swimming facilities

Norderstedt City Park covers more than 750,000 square metres of water, woodland and meadows, inviting visitors to explore and relax. The Stadtpark Strandbad adds a place to swim. When planning your day, you can therefore choose between paths through the park’s different landscapes and spending time by the water.

Another option for swimming is the ARRIBA Erlebnisbad. Its listed features include 3,000 square metres of water surface, 15 pools, six water slides and a Fishpipe. As facilities may change, check current operations before travelling.

Connections to Hamburg

The connection to Hamburg may also play a role in choosing where to stay: the U1 provides direct connections from Norderstedt to Dammtor and Hauptbahnhof stations. During the day, trains run every five to ten minutes. If you want to combine appointments in Hamburg with a stay in Norderstedt, check the current timetable before your trip.

City history and culture

The STADT.GESCHICHTEN.LABOR. at the city museum uses interactive stations to explore Norderstedt’s past, present and future. Its hands-on and information stations offer a different approach from the outdoor nature attractions, placing the city’s development at the centre.

The Fire Brigade Museum also focuses on history: its more than 2,300 square metres of exhibition space showcase historic fire engines and former firefighting methods. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours in advance.

The Kulturwerk am See has a concert and theatre hall with 440 seats, hosting artists from Norderstedt, Germany, Europe and beyond. The Kulturwerk is also connected with the industrial heritage of a former sand-lime brick factory. This places cultural events and the site’s links to its industrial past side by side as distinct aspects of the venue. As the programme changes, check current events before your visit.
