Arrive and plan your stay

Ellerau is known for its quiet atmosphere and rural surroundings; Hamburg is about 20 kilometres away. The town is on the AKN railway line between Kaltenkirchen and Eidelstedt and is also served by a public transport stop. Check current connections for your journey. Deciding which of these features best suits your travel plans can be a useful first step when choosing where to stay.

Green space and exercise in Bürgerpark

At around six hectares, Bürgerpark is Ellerau’s main green space. It combines areas for relaxation and paths with habitats for plants and animals. Along the Krumbek, quiet areas alternate with more active zones. The park also offers opportunities for exercise: its fitness trail has three combinations of exercise equipment. By comparison, Bürgerpark focuses on paths, green space and exercise on the equipment, while the outdoor pool focuses on swimming and classes. This can help you decide between the two leisure areas based on what you would like to include in your stay.

Swimming and facilities at the outdoor pool

Ellerau’s outdoor pool has a paddling pool for young children and changing facilities with hot-water showers. Free parking is available in front of the pool grounds. The kiosk serves hot and cold drinks and food. Before visiting, check the pool’s seasonal opening times and the current kiosk offerings.

Swimming lessons for children are offered by VHS Ellerau and DLRG Ellerau e.V. The VHS programme at the outdoor pool also includes back fitness, aqua aerobics and aqua power jogging. Pool staff can award swimming badges, including lifesaving badges, and assess swimming competence on request. If a class or test is part of your plans, confirm in advance that it will take place. One technical feature is the energy-efficient heating of the water using waste heat from a biogas plant.

Crafts and schooling at the Karl-Rautenberg Museum

The Karl-Rautenberg Museum displays tools from shoemaking, tailoring, blacksmithing and carpentry workshops, as well as from the masonry and butchery trades. Old class photographs, exercise books and schoolbooks illustrate changes in the education system. The oldest minute book, dating from the early 18th century, is also on display. The exhibits thus range from a variety of trades to historical teaching materials and an early written record.

Rural life at the Ellerau Local History Museum

The Ellerau Local History Museum focuses on rural life around 1900. Reconstructed rooms, including a bedroom and a kitchen, are furnished as they would have been in rural farmhouses. There is also a classroom with historical exhibits. This look at living spaces and teaching offers a different focus from the craft tools and school materials at the Karl-Rautenberg Museum. If you are planning a museum visit, check the opening hours in advance.
