Ulsnis is located right on the Gunnebyer Noor and the Schlei, amid a wooded landscape. Water and greenery define the village, alongside its history and sacred art. Ulsnis is part of a Natura 2000 site. When comparing hotels in Ulsnis, you can plan your stay around whether you are most interested in bathing spots and the Schlei, nature or historical topics. The wider travel destination of Schleswig-Flensburg offers scenery that extends beyond the Noor and Schlei: the district also includes the Flensburg Fjord, with its unspoilt steep coasts and beaches, as well as the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape. This places Ulsnis in a broader regional context.

The Schlei, bathing spots and salt meadows

Ulsnisstrand is a bathing area right on the Schlei. The Hagab bathing area is considered suitable for families with small children because of its shallow water. Hagab has parking and toilets; a shower was also added there in 2024. The salt meadows at the end of the Ulsnisstrand path on the Schlei are considered a rare habitat for characteristic flora and fauna. The bathing area and salt meadow therefore represent different aspects of the landscape: spending time by the water and a special habitat.

On foot, by bike and on the water

Ulsnis and the surrounding region can be explored on foot or by bike. If you are travelling with a dog, a section several hundred metres north of Hagab is relevant; dogs are welcome there. Check local beach rules if necessary.

Activities on the water also vary depending on the location and how you plan to use them. Schlei boats stop at Ulsnisstrand; if you are planning a trip, check the timetable in advance. The Schlei Boat Club Ulsnis-Steinfeld offers moorings for kayaks, rowing boats and dinghies in Ulsnis-Stauertwedt. Ulsnisstrand has a slipway and guest berths for larger boats. Confirm berth availability before your trip.

Village history and church

St. Wilhadi Church brings together several historical periods. Its portal dates to around 1150; parts of the church are believed to be the oldest surviving church structures in Angeln. The church also features an Early Gothic corpus of Christ, dated to 1230/40. After spending more than 100 years in the Flensburg Museum, it returned to the church in 2012.

The Kius-Ulsnis-Steinfeld Village Museum focuses on local village and social history. It displays objects from homes, farms and craft businesses, including items from the 17th and 18th centuries and a camera purchased in 1898. While the church and corpus of Christ offer insights into architectural history and sacred art, the museum explores everyday objects and craftsmanship. The village is also home to the Giant of Ulsnis, a sculpture in the form of a giant.
