Scheggerott: Rural Landscapes, Angling and Prehistory
Accommodation in Scheggerott
Landscape and Getting to Scheggerott
Scheggerott is predominantly rural in character. The landscape includes scattered farms and detached houses; the municipality also includes extensive woodland in Brarupholz. The settlement pattern and woodland are distinct features of the municipal area. For choosing your destination, this combination provides a clear picture: Scheggerott is defined above all by its rural character.
Scheggerott can be reached from Norderbrarup or Arrild via district road 18. Which of the two routes is right for you depends on your starting point. Both place names provide specific reference points for planning your route.
Angling and Early Settlement
In eastern Scheggerott, Lake Lyskjaer is used for angling. This gives the town a clear leisure connection centred on fishing. The lake offers a different focus from the description of farms, houses and woodland: here, the emphasis is on its use as an angling lake. If angling is a factor in choosing your destination, you can take this into account when making your decision.
Several burial mounds in northern Scheggerott date from the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age and provide evidence of early settlement in the area. They add a prehistoric perspective to the picture of the rural surroundings. The burial mounds thus offer a historical way to explore the area, distinct from its landscape and angling.
Schleswig-Flensburg as a Wider Travel Destination
The wider travel destination of Schleswig-Flensburg is home to distinct cultural and historical attractions. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart still remain today. In Idstedt, the historic memorial site and museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. From 1986 to 2012, Kappeln served as a filming location for the television series “Der Landarzt” under the name “Deekelsen”.
The natural areas in the wider travel destination of Schleswig-Flensburg also each have their own character. At 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the district’s largest nature reserve; well-maintained paths and guided walks offer insights into its flora and fauna. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, the northernmost point of Schleswig-Holstein’s young moraine landscape, including around 65 breeding species. The Schlei Nature Park features gentle hills, forests, hedgerows, rapeseed and grain fields, sandy beaches and bathing coves. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species.
Guided nature tours are available in the Schlei Nature Park; the Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycling routes also cross the landscape. The SchleiUferTörn is a 25-kilometre circular cycling route around the middle section of the Schlei, starting in Arnis. Arnis is also now a destination for water sports enthusiasts.
