Accommodation in Owschlag
Owschlag offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: a themed network of circular routes, the seasonal bathing area at Lake Owschlag, and topics relating to nature and history.
Walking and cycling routes
Themed route network comprises seven circular walking routes and six circular cycling routes. It includes 25 information boards on natural history, geography, archaeology and village history. An overview board is located at the bus and train station; an orientation map is available from the municipality and regional tourist information offices. The project was implemented in 2021 and is now well established. The different themes give the routes a local connection: along the way, you can explore natural history as well as archaeological traces or village history.
Lake Owschlag and the moor
Southeast of Owschlag, on Lake Owschlag, there is a municipal bathing area with a lawn, playground, fire pit, masonry barbecue and shelter. During the season, swimming, sunbathing and relaxing are possible; bathing water quality is checked regularly throughout the season. Its seasonal operation is a useful point of reference if you are planning your stay around the bathing facilities. The lake is also part of the Lake Owschlag FFH protected area, EU site number 1623-306. The bathing area and protected-area status highlight two different aspects of the lake: seasonal recreational opportunities and its role as a protected area.
The Owschlag Moor is part of the Binnendünen- und Moorlandschaft im Sorgetal bird protection area and is an important breeding habitat for birds. The red-backed shrike, crane and snipe are among the bird species that contribute to the area’s conservation value. Here, the focus is on the importance of the moor as a habitat. Together with the FFH site by the lake, the moor gives Owschlag its own distinctive connection to nature.
Agriculture, church and the Ochsenweg
De lĂĽtte Oldtimer SchĂĽĂĽn is a private museum featuring tractors and agricultural machinery from earlier times, shown in active use. During a visit, you can learn about historical farming and watch old machinery being restored. Visits must be arranged in advance; visiting arrangements may change. The experience combines working machinery with the work involved in restoring it.
The history of the church also offers specific points in time. Owschlag’s Erlöserkirche was consecrated on 13 October 1963. The road to Ramsdorf is called Pastor Jäger Stieg and is named after Hans Jäger, Owschlag’s first regular pastor. The oldest bell, which used to hang in the church hall, dates from 1606.
There are also well-preserved sections of the Ochsenweg in the municipality of Owschlag. This historic military and trade route adds the perspective of an earlier transport route to the local history.
The wider region: Rendsburg-Eckernförde
Across the wider travel destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, the district’s signposted cycling network covers 1,000 kilometres; the district is also home to four nature parks. This is on a different scale from Owschlag’s local themed route network: the circular routes relate to the village, while the cycling network and nature parks cover the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde. This distinction helps you separate local interests from the wider regional context.
