Lütjenwestedt offers two different points of reference when choosing a destination: a variety of hiking and cycling trails along the Kiel Canal, and a restored biotope on the Haaler Au. If you are looking for a hotel, you can decide whether outdoor activities or protected nature is more important to your travel plans. Both themes describe the village from their own perspective and give your search a specific local context.

Hiking, Cycling and Trails

The local hiking and cycling network along the Kiel Canal includes a variety of routes. This makes both activities a basis for planning your trip: you can consider hiking, cycling, or a combination of the two. There is also a multifunctional path towards Gokels, which is connected to the railway line between Neumünster and Heide. When comparing your travel interests, you can distinguish between these two details: a variety of hiking and cycling trails on the one hand, and the multifunctional path with its connection to the railway line on the other.

The Biotope on the Haaler Au

The biotope covers around 80 hectares along the Haaler Au and the Kiel Canal. Restoration created a protected wetland that provides a habitat for rare plants and animals; the area is also used for recreation. This natural area therefore represents both conservation and recreational use. Unlike the hiking and cycling trails, which offer a range of routes, the biotope focuses attention on a specific landscape. For travellers who also consider nature and recreation when choosing a destination, it is a clear local point of reference alongside the trail network.

Within the wider travel destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde

About 70 kilometres, or two-thirds, of the Kiel Canal runs through Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. The district also has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline and a signposted cycling network stretching 1,000 kilometres. There are four nature parks in the district. A substantial part of their area consists of nature reserves and protected landscapes, providing habitats for a diverse range of plants and animals. The 180-kilometre Nature Park Trail passes through all four parks.

One example of the district's natural landscapes is Westensee-Obere Eider Nature Park, characterised by numerous complexes of lakes in the Schleswig-Holstein Uplands. It includes Lake Westensee, covering around 7 km² and a popular destination for day trips; the banks of the Eider in this nature park provide a habitat for kingfishers. Dosenmoor also provides a habitat for distinctive flora and fauna.

The wider regional picture also includes places of cultural and historical interest. Rendsburg's old town dates back to the 13th century and is still characterised by medieval buildings. Rendsburg is also home to the Jewish Museum, housed in Schleswig-Holstein's oldest surviving synagogue; it is a historic listed building and a memorial.
