Wahlstorf: Estate history, Lake Lanker and routes
Accommodation in Wahlstorf
If you are looking for a hotel in Wahlstorf, local themes can shape the focus of your trip: estate history, Lake Lanker, and cycling and hiking routes offer different options. This makes it possible to plan a stay around culture, water or outdoor activities without combining these interests into a single itinerary.
Gut Wahlstorf and its architectural history
The former moated castle at Gut Wahlstorf stood on an island surrounded by two branches of the Schwentine. The estate’s architectural features include a late medieval two-part manor house, whose core has remained largely unchanged, and a completely thatched barn dating from 1584. The barn is considered one of the largest and oldest surviving half-timbered buildings in Schleswig-Holstein. The site of the moated castle, the manor house and the barn therefore offer several points of interest for anyone interested in architectural history.
The Low German nativity play has been a local tradition since 1998. The 2025 performance took place in the wheat barn at Gut Wahlstorf. If you are interested in the nativity play, check the event dates before your trip.
Lake Lanker and nature conservation
Some parts of Lake Lanker are closed to watercraft; areas intended to protect waterbirds are also recommended to be avoided. The relevant navigation guidance was updated on January 15, 2025. Before setting out, check the current rules and distinguish between binding restrictions and recommended avoidance zones.
An official bathing area lies east of Gut Wahlstorf on Lake Lanker. Before you travel, check what facilities are available there. Lake Lanker is also part of the Schwentine Water Trail.
Cycling, hiking and canoeing
The 38-kilometer Land Tour passes through the rural surroundings of Holstein Switzerland, through small villages and to Gut Wahlstorf. Gut Wahlstorf is also one of the Schusteracht’s eight cultural and historical highlights. Its cycling routes are suitable for walking trips too. This gives you different ways to shape your trip: the Land Tour is described as a cycling route with a specific length, while the Schusteracht cycling routes can also be used on foot.
A canoe launch point in Wahlstorf is located by Fischer Bock. Food, coffee and cake are available on a lakeside terrace. Access with a trailer is possible; the canoes must then be carried about 60 meters downhill to Lake Fuhlensee. Take this carry into account when planning and check the access details and food and drink options in advance.
