Nehmten lies directly on Great Plön Lake and is part of the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. The municipality has marked trails for hiking, cycling, riding, and carriage rides. The landscape can be explored via circular trails through meadows, forests, and the surroundings of the lakes. There are specific details about route length and duration to help you choose a hike; at the same time, the trails differ in their routes and views.

Hiking Trails and Their Different Routes

The Gut Nehmten circular trail is 8.97 kilometers long and takes about 2 hours and 13 minutes. It starts at the parking lot by the Im Sande bus stop in Nehmten. From there, the route passes through meadows and the lowlands of the Tensfelder Au to Hornsmühlen. The return route follows the wooded shore of Lake Stocksee. This means the loop alternates between open countryside and a section along the lake.

The Nehmtener Horn circular trail is longer, at 15.4 kilometers, with a stated duration of 3 hours and 52 minutes. The Sepeler Kliff Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is along the route. Because of the sensitive habitat, the route runs by the water below the cliff. Check the route details again before setting out on your hike. With their different lengths and time estimates, the two circular trails provide a concrete basis for planning your outings.

The Stocksee circular trail passes through gently rolling countryside shaped by the Ice Age. It heads toward Ziegelhof Nehmten and follows Lake Stocksee through forest and pastureland. Elevated spots may offer views across the lake, where tufted ducks and other waterbirds can sometimes be observed. The circular trail also includes a possible detour to a bathing area with a pier and a view across Lake Stocksee. Wildlife sightings depend on the season and are not guaranteed.

Forest, Cliff and Nature by the Lake

Nehmten Forest is one of the larger contiguous forest areas in Schleswig-Holstein. Around half of its area is made up of deciduous forest. Another striking landscape feature is Sepeler Kliff: a narrow path climbs about 25 meters there and opens up a wide view across Great Plön Lake. The cliff is a former shoreline of Lake Plön. From June to September, rare plants bloom on its nutrient-poor soil, including wild thyme, maiden pink, and restharrow. Depending on the season and with a little luck, visitors at the cliff may also see waterfowl on Lake Plön, red-backed shrikes, and white-tailed eagles.

The trails reveal different sides of the landscape: around Lake Stocksee, the focus is on forest, pastureland, and possible birdwatching, while Sepeler Kliff adds views across the lake and its distinctive plant life. A planned renaturation project covers 116 hectares of meadows along the Tensfelder Au.

Horse Riding and Gut Nehmten

Gut Nehmten and the municipality of Nehmten offer a free, interconnected riding trail network of more than 15 kilometers. It passes through fields, meadows, and deciduous and coniferous forests, and runs in places alongside Great Plön Lake and Lake Stocksee. The trail network complements the marked options for hiking, cycling, and carriage rides with its own way of exploring the landscape.

Gut Nehmten has been in the same family since 1768. Frozen game products are sold directly from the estate in portion-sized packs: meat from fallow deer, roe deer, and wild boar, as well as grilled sausages and salami. If you plan to buy directly from the estate, it is best to check availability before setting out. This makes it possible to consider the nature trails and the estate’s special offerings as distinct highlights of a stay in Nehmten.
