The defining features of Kühren include the Kührener Teich, with its protected landscape, and the historic watermill. These two themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: nature watching and trails sit alongside a cultural and historical landmark.

Kührener Teich: Protected Area and Habitat

The Kührener Teich and Surroundings Nature Reserve covers 79 hectares and was designated in 1994. At its centre is a 40-hectare fishpond with an average depth of half a metre. The figures refer to two different areas: the entire nature reserve and the pond. This makes it possible to distinguish the extent of the water body from the size of the protected area.

The Kührener Teich provides breeding conditions for black-necked grebes and supports one of the largest breeding populations of this species in Schleswig-Holstein. In summer, it is also an important gathering place for greylag geese. The area is an important feeding ground for white-tailed eagles. These details describe different functions of the habitat: breeding conditions, a summer gathering place and a feeding area.

An 18-hectare area between Lanker See and Kührener Teich is extensively grazed by Galloway cattle. There is also a small birdwatching shelter at Kührener Teich. If you are interested in wildlife, both the habitats described and a specific observation point are worth focusing on.

Trails and Nature Experiences

The countryside around the Lanker See and Kührener Teich nature reserves can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by boat. Local nature conservation rules apply. The different ways of getting around offer different opportunities to experience the landscape, so plan your visit in accordance with the rules in force locally.

A 16-kilometre trail around Lanker See passes both nature reserves and is signposted as part of the Schusteracht cycling route. The distance gives you a specific reference point for planning your route. Signage and access conditions may change, so check both before setting out.

NABU offers nature tours in the area. If you are planning to join a tour, confirm availability locally in advance. This lets you consider a guided introduction to nature as an option alongside wildlife watching and exploring independently.

Historic Kührener Watermill

The historic Kührener watermill has been preserved and is designated as a protected cultural monument. Schusteracht also highlights it as a cultural and historical attraction. The mill thus adds an architectural and historical dimension to the pond area's natural appeal. Together with the nature reserve, it offers a different perspective on Kühren, without requiring both themes to be part of the same experience.

The Wider Setting: Plön as a Travel Destination

The wider travel destination of Plön reveals the water landscape on a larger scale. Plön district lies between the Baltic Sea and the Holstein Switzerland region and has around 50 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. The district has around 80 lakes, including Großer Plöner See, covering 29 square kilometres, and Selenter See, covering 22 square kilometres. These regional figures complement the local view of Kühren's 79-hectare protected area: they describe the district and its lakes, not the area of Kührener Teich.
