When choosing a place to stay, the things that interest you locally often matter. In Barmstedt, they range from Lake Rantzau and its surroundings to regional history, church architecture and cultural events. Cycling and walking are also part of the town’s character: the lake, woods and rural landscape are enjoyed year-round. The following highlights can help you assess Barmstedt according to your own plans.

Lake Rantzau, bathing area and paths

The bathing area at Lake Rantzau has a sandy beach and a sunbathing lawn of approximately 5,000 square metres. There are also volleyball and table tennis facilities, a children’s paddling area, a non-swimmer area and a swimming area with a maximum depth of two metres.

On the castle island in Lake Rantzau, there is a walking path around the lake and a rowing-boat rental. The route between the lake and the town centre is also easy to navigate: the traffic-calmed centre is one kilometre from the lake and can be reached via the blue or green circular route.

Cycling in and around Barmstedt

The Barmstedt cycling area has five routes connecting gardens, tree nurseries and natural landscapes. For a specific route option, the Bilsbek Niederung cycling route is another point of reference: it is 26 kilometres long, classified as easy and takes you by bicycle through the moorland landscapes of Holstein.

Traces of history

The site on the Krückau has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, around 3,500 years ago. Burial mounds remained visible there until the 19th century. Barmstedt was first mentioned in a document in 1140. Since then, Barmstedt and Rantzau Castle Island have played a central role in the history of southern Holstein. In the Middle Ages, the Knights of Barmstede initially administered the region from Barmstedt, followed later by the Schauenburgs.

A craft is also part of the town’s history: in the 19th century, Barmstedt shoemakers made waterproof sea boots. The historical themes therefore range from early traces of settlement and the administration of the region to a specific product made in the town.

Castle island, museum and church architecture

The castle island brings together a historic ensemble listed as a heritage site, an art studio, craft displays, the Museum of the County of Rantzau, a former castle prison, a working watermill and a rowing-boat rental. The individual features offer different perspectives on the island: historic buildings, crafts, a museum and activities by the lake.

The Museum of the County of Rantzau interprets regional history and the everyday lives of people who lived and worked there in different periods. The museum building was used as a district court until 1974. The former castle prison is next door and was in use until 1927. These dates refer to the former use of the two buildings.

The Church of the Holy Spirit is an original monument from the time of the Counts of Rantzau and a Baroque hall church, consecrated at Pentecost in 1718. Its wooden barrel vault is decorated with biblical scenes dating from 1754/56. The Baroque organ was completed in 1720 and has around 2,200 pipes and 34 stops. The church’s architecture, painted decoration and organ make it a distinct highlight alongside the museum and castle island.

Cultural events and getting there

The Church of the Holy Spirit hosts organ, choral and instrumental concerts, including an annual orchestral concert with a choir. Cultural and musical events are also held at Humburg House and Kulturschusterei. Check the dates before travelling, as programme details may change.
