Dürrröhrsdorf-Dittersbach lies in a hilly landscape north of the Elbe, on the edge of Saxon Switzerland National Park and the Lusatian Highlands. A stay can combine art and literary history, a historic mill site and activities in the surrounding area. The town’s defining landmarks include Schöne Höhe Belvedere, the church in Dittersbach, Porschendorf Mill and the trails through the countryside.

Art, Goethe Connections and Views

Schöne Höhe Belvedere was built from 1831 to 1833 as the first memorial to Goethe. The frescoes in the fresco hall depict scenes from Goethe’s ballads; Gottfried Semper designed the ceiling painting for the hall. The Goethe connection is reflected both in its dedication as a memorial and in the imagery of the frescoes. From the viewing platform, visitors can enjoy sweeping views across the surrounding region.

Since the frescoes were restored in 2000, the tower hall has served as a venue for cultural events and as a wedding room. The current events programme may vary. Dittersbach Church is also among the town’s cultural attractions: it houses a Silbermann organ dating from 1726.

Mill History and Regional Oils

Porschendorf Mill operates as a farm shop and producer of edible oils made from regional ingredients. Visitors can sample the oils in the farm shop and find out about the ingredients and recipes; products on offer may change. The mill was first documented in 1547 as a flour and sawmill. The site thus brings together the mill’s early history and the present-day production of regional edible oils.

Visitors to the mill can see original machinery and equipment. Guided mill tours are available on request and by prior arrangement. Please arrange your visit and tour in advance, as access and tour options may change. Food on offer includes a traditional mill meal or freshly baked bread and cake; current availability may vary. Bus route 236 serves the mill at the Porschendorf Erbgericht stop. Check the timetable before travelling, as route numbers and transport services may change.

Trails Through the Countryside

The surrounding area has an extensive, well-developed network of trails for hiking, cycling and horse riding. The Gottfried Semper Trail passes through Lieblingstal and by Hubertus Chapel. A cycling and hiking trail also follows a former railway embankment, offering sweeping views. Teufelskanzel is a large rock in the Wesenitz River, equipped with benches as a place to rest.

A historic circular route, with digital guidance, leads through Quandt’s Lieblingstal to the frescoes in the Belvedere’s tower hall. Digital route features may change over time. The trails each have a different focus: the circular route leads to the frescoes, while the cycling and hiking trail along the former railway embankment offers its own connection to the landscape, with sweeping views.

The Regional Setting

In the district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge, Saxon Switzerland National Park is Saxony’s only national park and Germany’s only rocky national park. This regional setting complements the local attractions of Dürrröhrsdorf-Dittersbach, which lies on the edge of the national park and the Lusatian Highlands.

When planning your hotel stay, you can choose your focus based on your travel interests: Goethe connections and views, mill history and regional oils, or trails for hiking, cycling and horse riding.
