Struppen: Cliffs, Trails and History
Accommodation in Struppen
Struppen brings together several specific attractions for a stay: the broad valley along the Elbe, hiking and climbing destinations in different districts, and local history that ranges from the church to the castle. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether you would like to focus mainly on hiking trails, climbing rocks or cultural sites.
Landscape and Viewpoints
The main settlement lies in a broad valley on the left bank of the Elbe; the slopes rise gently toward the surrounding ridges. Struppen is part of the Saxon Switzerland Landscape Conservation Area. In the district of Thürmsdorf, the mausoleum on the slope above the Elbe offers a view of the Elbe Valley. The “Pilz” viewpoint also offers a view over the Elbe Valley; it lies on a trail that approaches Struppen from Obervogelgesang. While the mausoleum is located in Thürmsdorf, the “Pilz” is part of a route that reaches Struppen from the direction of Obervogelgesang.
Climbing, Hiking and Cycling
The municipality of Struppen has 27 climbing peaks with routes of varying difficulty. In the district of Naundorf, more than 20 climbing peaks offer routes across all difficulty levels. Trails leading up to the Großer and Kleiner Bärenstein, as well as the ridge trail to Rauenstein, also start there. If you are comparing climbing destinations with a ridge route, Naundorf therefore offers a shared starting point for different types of outing.
The Rauenstein ridge trail crosses bridges and stairways and ends at the Rauenstein mountain inn. The ridge trail can be reached by train via Wehlen station; follow the yellow trail markers toward Rathen. Another marked trail approaches Struppen from Obervogelgesang. Along it are an old millstone and viewpoints overlooking the Eastern Ore Mountains and Dresden. The routes therefore also differ in their landmarks: bridges and stairways on the ridge trail contrast with the millstone and views along the route from the direction of Obervogelgesang.
The Moldau-Elbe Cycle Route passes through the Struppen district of Strand. Hiking the Painters’ Way and climbing are also among the activities highlighted in Struppen. When choosing a route, it is important to note that, in the wider destination of the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district, the Painters’ Way is exclusively a hiking trail and cannot be explored by bicycle or e-bike. The cycle route through Strand is a specifically named way to include cycling in your plans.
Church, Castle and Local History
Struppen Church is considered the oldest church in Saxon Switzerland. Its organ was built in 1668 and enlarged in 1736. Two events from the 18th century are also associated with the town: a truce was signed in Struppen on October 16, 1756, and Wilhelm Leberecht Götzinger was born here in 1758. Götzinger wrote books about Saxon Switzerland. The church, organ and literature associated with Götzinger each offer a different historical perspective.
Struppen Castle can be visited during public events, exhibitions and guided tours, as well as by prior arrangement. Access conditions may vary depending on the event and appointment availability. Check in advance which type of visit is planned for your preferred date.
