Dippoldiswalde – UNESCO World Heritage, Museums and Heathland
Accommodation in Dippoldiswalde
Dippoldiswalde lies at the foot of the Eastern Ore Mountains between Dresden and Altenberg. Since 6 July 2019, the town has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region. Mining history, museums and an educational trail are at the heart of its cultural offering; the Dippoldiswalde Heath and nearby Malter Reservoir add opportunities for hiking and leisure activities. This gives you several themes to choose from when planning a stay: mining, local history and time outdoors.
Mining and Local History
MiBERZ is housed in Dippoldiswalde Castle. In six vaulted rooms, visitors can learn about the early technologies used to mine and process silver ore. The focus is not only on the ore extracted, but also on the steps that made it usable. The World Heritage presentation in Dippoldiswalde also uses numerous media stations and virtual reality. This brings historical mining technology together with a modern way of presenting it.
The subject is also explored around the town: the mining educational trail forms a circular route through the medieval mining town. Its seven stops are linked to archaeological research. Unlike the presentation in the museum rooms, the trail places the history of mining along a route through the town.
The LOHGERBER MUSEUM & GALERIE Dippoldiswalde offers another perspective. It is located in a tannery built around 1750. The protected complex includes a Baroque house and a faithfully reconstructed, three-storey tannery workshop. The permanent exhibitions cover tanning and the leather industry, local history and the visual arts of the Eastern Ore Mountains. The range of subjects therefore extends from ore mining to the tanning trade and regional art.
Heathland and Malter Reservoir
Dippoldiswalde is surrounded by Dippoldiswalde Heath, a protected landscape area, and Malter Reservoir. The heath has marked hiking trails, offering a focus of their own alongside the town’s cultural attractions. Nearby Malter Reservoir is a recreational area with a water park, bathing beaches, camping, boat hire, mini golf, beach volleyball, tennis courts, restaurants and cafés. Hiking and scenery thus complement a wide range of waterside leisure activities. As facilities and services may change, it is advisable to check what is currently available before your visit.
Getting There and Finding a Hotel
There are a small number of parking spaces at the Weißeritz Valley Railway station in Dippoldiswalde. Bicycles can be carried on the train in the luggage car. If you are planning to travel by bicycle, check the current guidance on bicycle transport in advance; parking availability may also change. The information concerns two different ways of arriving: taking a bicycle on the train and parking at the railway station.
Before comparing specific hotel offers, consider which of these themes matters most to your stay.
