Kleinhennersdorf: Caves, Hiking and Landscapes
Accommodation in Kleinhennersdorf
Kleinhennersdorf offers a plateau landscape with views, caves and a variety of routes. At Kleinhennersdorfer Stein, a striking cave and the historic use of the rock meet hiking trails with different highlights. There is also a cultural programme at Heymannbaude and a wildlife enclosure.
Landscape and Views over the Elbe Valley
The village lies on a plateau 170 to 270 metres above the Elbe Valley. From there, views stretch far across the mountains of Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland. The elevated setting and the views give the area a different character from a visit focused solely on individual caves. If you want to spend time outdoors, you can combine the scenery with one of the routes described here.
Caves at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein
Lichterhöhle is the largest cave at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein. It is 20 metres long and 15 metres wide and was used for sandstone extraction. Sand-Hampel-Höhle is named after Friedrich Herrmann Hempel from Königstein, who began extracting sand there. Alongside their distinctive features, the caves also bear traces of the sandstone’s former use.
The caves are reached by a small path with sandy sections and a few steps. Due to significant erosion damage, stay on the paths. For a guided visit, the “On the Way to Scheuersand” hike offers easy, safe climbing and the chance to explore rock caves with flashlights. It is listed in the 2026 programme of certified national park guides; booking is required.
Hiking Routes and Cycling Tour
The “Tour for Little Cave Explorers” follows a red-marked path towards Kleinhennersdorf, then branches off to the caves at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein. The hike is 4.48 kilometres long and rated moderate. Another option is Stage 7 of the Forststeig, which passes over Kleinhennersdorfer Stein, where you can discover various caves.
For a longer cycling loop, the municipal Kohlbornstein Tour is 15 kilometres long. It passes through Papstdorf and Kleinhennersdorf before returning to Kurort Gohrisch. Because of the erosion-mountain terrain, some sections may be challenging. The stated distance and route provide a concrete basis for distinguishing this tour from the cave hikes.
Culture and Meeting Place
Since 2023, Heymannbaude in Kleinhennersdorf has been a rural meeting place and a centre for the performing arts. Its year-round programme includes performing arts courses, workshops, events and small festivals. Individual offerings may change; if you are travelling for a specific event, check the dates in advance.
Liethenmühle also offers a historical point of interest: the inscription “Liethenmühle, built in 1572” appears on its half-timbered house. It can be included as a detail on a visit that takes in local culture and history as well as the caves.
Wildlife Enclosure and Practical Information
At the Kleinhennersdorf wildlife enclosure, you can watch fallow deer in a natural setting. The enclosure is right beside a hiking trail. There is also a small wooden railway there as a simple play activity for children.
Guided hikes to the Kleinhennersdorf caves are scheduled from May to October on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., starting at the “Zur Hoffnung” inn in Papstdorf. Check the specific dates in advance. The Papstdorf/Gasthaus “Zur Hoffnung” stop is listed as the starting point for the cave hike. Travel options to get there include hiking buses 244b from Königstein and 244a from Bad Schandau National Park Station. Check the current connections before travelling.
