Dohna: Discover Castles, Church and Nature
Accommodation in Dohna
Dohna is a historic town between Dresden, Saxon Switzerland and the Eastern Ore Mountains. When planning a hotel stay, you can first consider what you would like your visit to focus on: walks and scenery, archaeological history, or architecture and guided visits. The different themes offer a starting point for shaping your stay around your interests.
Circular Trails and Nature in Spargründe
Spargründe has a short and a long circular trail. The nature reserve is characterised by streams, deciduous forest, partly protected ground vegetation and a diverse birdlife. A visit to the area therefore brings both the choice of trail and its varied landscape features into focus. The two circular trails make it easy to plan a walk, while the forest, waterways and vegetation shape the character of the nature reserve.
The rocky hilltops in Spargründe also add a distinctive feature: from the rocky areas, the view extends across Dohna, its castle and the town. If you are interested in the landscape, you can combine this viewpoint with views of the natural surroundings. This makes Spargründe a useful focus for planning your trip if you are weighing up trails and viewpoints against historic buildings.
Kahlbusch and Its Geological Features
Kahlbusch is a geological natural monument. A volcanic rhyolite dome, it rises about 45 metres above Dohna. Kahlbusch also contains pockets up to six metres deep that are considered fossil-bearing sites. These features give the site a different focus from the circular trails and viewpoints: here, the emphasis is on the geological formation and the distinctive fossil sites. This lets you explore Dohna’s landscape from several perspectives, from walking trails to a natural monument.
Castles, Archaeological Monuments and Church Architecture
Dohna’s castles were among the most important castles in the medieval Margraviate of Meissen. Burgberg and Robisch have been protected archaeological monuments since 1935. These historical themes can be complemented by a look at the architecture: St. Mary’s Church in Dohna is a three-aisled Late Gothic hall church, consecrated in 1489. The church also contains a Late Gothic winged altarpiece dating from 1518.
The different dates highlight different aspects: the church’s consecration points to its architectural history, while the year 1518 dates the winged altarpiece. This allows you to take in both the church building and its furnishings during your visit. If you are interested in the history of the castles and archaeological monuments, Burgberg and Robisch offer another historical focus. Dohna’s castles, meanwhile, are part of the history of the medieval Margraviate of Meissen.
Planning Visits and Travel
St. Mary’s Church has been accessible to visitors with limited mobility since 2009. Visits and guided tours can be arranged through the Dohna parish office; it is best to confirm your plans before travelling. The Dohna Local History Museum offers guided visits to its permanent and special exhibitions, as well as town tours covering the old town, church and castle. You should confirm dates in advance here too. This helps you decide whether to focus your plans on exhibitions, a town tour or individual buildings.
By road, Dohna can be reached via the S 178 state road through the Müglitz Valley and from the Pirna exit on the A17. In the surrounding area, regional train RB 72 connects Heidenau with Glashütte and Altenberg; it is known as the Müglitztalbahn. Check current connections and timetables before travelling so you can plan your journey accordingly. Dohna offers a range of options for a stay, from nature and geology to church architecture and castle history.
