Kirnitzschtal: Historic Tram, Mills and Rocks
Accommodation in Kirnitzschtal
You can explore Kirnitzschtal through a range of very different outings: a historic tram, trails bearing traces of timber rafting, old mills and distinctive sandstone formations each offer a different focus. The Kirnitzschtalbahn has been in operation since 1898, carrying hikers, tourists and spa guests to their destinations. It is Germany’s only tram that enters a national park. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural history, hiking, a cycling route and natural attractions.
Tram, Hiking Trails and Cycling Route
The approximately 13-kilometre-long Flößersteig trail follows the route of historic timber rafting, with numerous information boards, from the mouth of the Kirnitzsch to the Neumannmühle through Kirnitzschtal. Parts of the trail can be included in circular hikes in the national park. The Flößersteig is suitable for experienced hikers: in places, it is very narrow, exposed and difficult to walk. Conditions depend on the weather.
The Sebnitz–Kirnitzschtal cycling loop offers a different perspective: it leads from Sebnitz into Kirnitzschtal and back again. While the Flößersteig is described by its length, information boards and timber-rafting theme, the clear point of reference for this cycling route is the out-and-back journey between the two towns.
Mills and Cultural History
NeumannmĂĽhle is the only mill in Kirnitzschtal that has largely retained its original form. Its older section was a sawmill with a single-blade saw frame and has remained almost unchanged since it was founded. It is at least 450 years old. The water wheel is also described in detail: the breastshot wheel has a diameter of 4.80 metres.
Buschmühle tells another story of the valley’s mills. Its grinding and saw mills have been unused since 1992, but are still intact; Buschmühle was first mentioned in a document in 1592. Felsenmühle has been a popular place to stop for over 100 years in Kirnitzschtal. The valley itself takes centre stage during the annual Kirnitzschtal Festival. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the event dates for your travel year.
Further afield in the Saxon Switzerland region lies Arnstein Castle, also known as Ottendorfer Raubschloss. It features stone traces of its former wooden structures, rock carvings and a deep cistern. Alongside the mills, traces of earlier buildings and uses also form part of the region’s cultural history.
Rock Formations and Nature
Kuhstall is located on Neuer Wildenstein above Kirnitzschtal. This natural sandstone arch is approximately 11 metres high, about 17 metres wide and around 24 metres deep. The so-called Himmelsleiter (Sky Ladder) has metal steps leading through a narrow rock cleft to a viewing platform with a view of the Bärenfangwände and the surrounding rocky area. Alternatively, an easier path leads to the plateau, where there has been an inn since 1842.
In the upper part of Kirnitzschtal, near Hinterhermsdorf, lies the Kirnitzsch Gorge with the Obere Schleuse. With a little patience and luck, you can spot the white-throated dipper in the valley. It is the only songbird that can dive in flowing water. Lichtenhain Waterfall is one of the most traditional excursion destinations in Saxon Switzerland and has attracted hikers, nature lovers and those seeking relaxation since the 19th century. Historically, when the reservoir held enough water, the weir was opened; this briefly caused Lichtenhain Creek to rush loudly.
Practical Information for Your Stay
There are only a few parking spaces in Kirnitzschtal. Bus and/or the Kirnitzschtalbahn are recommended for arriving and departing. The “Obere Schleuse” boat trip in the surrounding area is accessible only on foot. These tips can help you plan your outings separately from your journey to the area, rather than assuming the same transport option will work for every destination.
Lichtenhain Waterfall can be reached by bus route 241 and the Kirnitzschtalbahn; it is about a three-minute walk from the stop. Check transport information for the relevant season if you plan to use this connection. This gives you a practical distinction for planning excursions: transport options and the walk from the stop are specified for the waterfall, while the boat trip is described as accessible on foot.
