Frohburg for Culture and Routes

Frohburg offers two distinct focal points for a stay: architectural and local history, and routes for walking and cycling. If you are looking for a hotel in Frohburg, you can choose your destination according to which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Castle and Town History

Frohburg Castle is the oldest building in the town. The present four-wing complex developed from a stone building dating to around 1200. In the 16th century, the complex took shape incorporating three medieval tower structures from the 13th century. The Frohburg Museum has been housed in the castle since 1974. The various parts of the building therefore tell the story of several phases in the castle’s history, while the museum has been associated with the building for decades.

St. Michaelis also offers several historical points of interest. The church was first mentioned in 1233; its sacristy is thought to be its oldest part. In 1877, it was completely redesigned inside and out in the Neo-Gothic style. The altar area features nine oil paintings of Frohburg pastors, dating from 1613 to 1849. The early reference, later renovation and paintings offer different perspectives on the history of the church.

The Ceramics Museum hosts temporary exhibitions by artists and craftspeople from the region. As the exhibition program changes, it is a good idea to check the latest information before visiting. In the Frohburg district of Kohren-Sahlis, potteries showcase traditional craftsmanship and sell regional products. Another landmark on the market square is the Centaur Fountain, which has stood there since 1899.

There are guided, self-guided and digital walking tours to help you explore the town. QR codes provide historical information; digital tour features may change. Together with the castle, church and fountain, they offer different ways to discover the town’s history without limiting yourself to a single building.

Hiking and Cycling

The hiking routes differ in length and course. The loop trail “Nature and Culture – Frohburg,” rated easy, is 13.45 kilometers long and starts and ends at Frohburg railway station. A 14-kilometer hiking route around Frohburg passes through the Eschefelder Teiche Nature Reserve. The protected area is home to more than 100 bird species and includes lush river meadows. So when choosing a route, it is not just their similar lengths that are worth considering: one is specifically described as a railway-station loop, while the other passes through the pond landscape. Check the latest route details before setting out, as they may change.

The Wyhratal Cycle Route is 29.37 kilometers long and rated as an easy bike ride. It passes through Frohburg and goes by St. Michaelis within the town. Before reaching Frohburg, the route passes through the Streitwald Nature Reserve. The town is also a rail connection point for the cycle route. This lets you view the church architecture as part of a cycle route that extends beyond Frohburg.
