Bennewitz: nature and architecture

Bennewitz brings together a range of themes for a stay, including the landscape along the Mulde, walking and cycling routes, and historic buildings. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether nature, outdoor activities or local history should shape your stay. The different points of interest make it easier to choose the focus that suits you.

Churches, a mill and historic buildings

In the centre of Bennewitz stands a late Romanesque fortified church; a Sorbian circular village layout has been preserved nearby. The combination of the church and the settlement pattern gives the town centre a distinctive historical character. The village church in Deuben is a medieval chancel-tower church; later alterations added late Gothic and Baroque features.

In Grubnitz, the Dutch-style windmill is regarded as Saxony’s oldest tower windmill of this type and is significant in the history of technology. In Leulitz stands a simple Baroque manor house with a Renaissance-era seat-niche portal. Also in Leulitz, St. Laurentius Church was built in the 14th century; its features include Gothic windows and a vaulted interior. The stone arch bridge on the Leipzig–Dresden railway line is recognised for its importance to railway and architectural history.

Bennewitz cemetery is a historic memorial site: it is home to the 1939 grave monument of soldier Siegfried Kummer. It illustrates the war graves of soldiers in their respective home communities.

The Mulde landscape, forest and activities

Parts of the landscape and the Middle Mulde nature reserve lie within the Bennewitz area. Planitz Forest is considered a habitat for rare plants and animals. Walking and cycling routes run along the Mulde and through the forest. The Mulde cycle route also passes through Bennewitz on a section along the United Mulde. This gives you a choice of both routes through forest areas and a named cycling route.

Bennewitz is also described as a starting point for water excursions on the Mulde. Marineking offers SUPs and pedal boats for groups of up to ten people, as well as a shuttle between different start and end points. If you plan to use these services, check availability in advance. The information about group size and the shuttle can help you coordinate the activity with your fellow travellers; it does not replace checking the current terms of the offer.
