Accommodation in Zschopau
Zschopau offers a range of options for a stay: Renaissance and industrial history around Wildeck Castle, a protected Old Town, mining history, and trails for walking and cycling. If you are looking for a hotel in Zschopau, you can plan your trip around whether you want to spend more time on the town’s history, a guided tour underground or excursions. We recommend checking current timetables, access conditions and trail conditions shortly before your trip.
Wildeck Castle, Gardens and Old Town
The protected Old Town preserves a medieval street plan. Notable buildings include town houses from the second half of the 18th century in a simple Baroque style, sections of the late-medieval town wall dating from 1495, Wildeck Castle and St. Martin’s Church. The historic setting thus spans everything from the medieval town layout to the 18th-century town houses.
Wildeck Castle is a Renaissance castle. Its museums are devoted to regional industrial history, particularly Saxon vehicle manufacturing. Exhibits include DKW and MZ motorcycles, enduro bikes and racing motorcycles. They offer a detailed insight into one aspect of the region’s industrial history.
The castle gardens comprise a courtyard, a Baroque garden, a rose garden and a pergola area. From there, you can enjoy views of the Zschopense, the bridges of Zschopau and the surrounding area to the east, south and west. Along with the architecture, the gardens and views offer another focus for a visit to the castle.
Mining History and Walking Trails
The visitor mine preserves traces of medieval silver mining in their original state. A secured footpath approximately 250 metres long leads underground. A guided tour lasts around 45 minutes and covers mining, geology, mineralogy and the traditions of the Ore Mountains. A visit therefore combines tangible traces of mining with topics in natural history and regional history. Access and tour conditions may change; check the latest information before your visit.
Outdoor trails also explore the landscape and mining history: paths along the banks of the Zschopau lead to the visitor mine and Teufelskanzel. The Wurzelweg leads into the side valleys of the Zschopau and former mining areas. There are different hikes to choose from when planning your time: the Bodemerweg is a one-hour hike, while the circular hike from Wildeck Castle to Villa Wilisch takes two hours. Check trail conditions shortly before setting out.
Cycling and Getting Here
The Zschopau Valley Cycle Route extends for 137 kilometres through the Zschopau Valley and passes through Zschopau between Oberwiesenthal and the area near Döbeln. From the source of the Zschopau to Flöha, it is continuously signposted for 82 kilometres. These details describe different aspects of the cycle route: its course through the valley and the section with continuous signage. When planning, you can distinguish which distance information is relevant to your own ride.
The Erzgebirgsbahn serves two stops within Zschopau. Zschopau station provides access to the town centre and Wildeck Castle. From the station, the route to the castle, its garden and the historic Old Town crosses the Zschopau bridge and follows steps. Public transport serves the entire town and Krumhermersdorf. The tourist information office is located at the museum counter in Wildeck Castle, in the historic Old Town. Check the latest timetable when planning your journey.
