Discover Olbernhau
Accommodation in Olbernhau
Olbernhau can be explored through two distinct themes: the Dörfelbachtal Family Trail and the Olbernhau Town Museum. The trail combines nature, play and family activities with analogue geocaching; the museum is devoted to natural history as well as industry and crafts. If you choose Olbernhau as your destination, these highlights can help organise your interests during your stay: an activity-focused trail on the one hand, and cultural history on the other.
Dörfelbachtal Family Trail: nature, play and geocaching
The Dörfelbachtal Family Trail combines analogue geocaching with eight activity stations and two stamp stations. Nature, play and family activities are its main themes. This brings together different elements: the search involved in geocaching, the activity stations and the stamp stations. For your planning, bear in mind that visitor materials and conditions may change. Therefore, check the latest visitor information before your visit.
Olbernhau Town Museum: history and folk art
The themes at the Olbernhau Town Museum range from local natural history to the history of industry and crafts. The exhibits also include Ore Mountain toy pattern sheets and historic machines. A 3.20-metre-high folk-art pyramid adds to these highlights. Natural history, manufacturing and folk art thus offer different ways to engage with the museum’s themes.
The collection’s themes are permanent, while individual displays may change. If you are particularly interested in a certain area or a specific exhibit, check the current exhibition information in advance.
Erzgebirgskreis: hiking and scenery on a broader scale
Across the wider destination of Erzgebirgskreis, the signposted hiking network extends for around 4,500 kilometres. One specific example of a single route is the Schwarzenberg Panorama Trail: this circular hike follows the heights around Schwarzenberg, is 13.8 kilometres long and takes about 4 hours and 5 minutes. Both the route length and an approximate duration are provided here as a guide.
Panorama trails around the mining towns of Schneeberg, Schwarzenberg and Zwönitz offer views of their historic town centres. The Fichtelberg near Oberwiesenthal is also one of the distinctive landscape features of Erzgebirgskreis: at 1,215 metres, it is the highest mountain in Saxony. The wider Ore Mountains are also associated with hiking, winter sports, mining history, Christmas traditions, crafts and historic steam railways. Historic town centres and the Fichtelberg offer contrasting landscape highlights.
Culture in Erzgebirgskreis
The Erzgebirge/Krušnohořà Mining Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. Seiffen is considered the birthplace of Ore Mountain folk art. The Ore Mountain Open-Air Museum in Kurort Seiffen features historic buildings and workshops from the 19th and early 20th centuries. At the heart of the museum is the original Preißler turning workshop, preserved with its water-powered drive. These examples give the region’s cultural offering distinct highlights: World Heritage, folk art and historic craft techniques.
