Niederwürschnitz: Christmas Mountain and Local History
Accommodation in Niederwürschnitz
Niederwürschnitz lies on the northern edge of the Erzgebirge natural region, in the former Lugau/Oelsnitz coalfield between Zwickau and Chemnitz. The Würschnitz River flows through the town. Federal Highway 180 runs through the town center, and an exit from the A72 is nearby. Check the exact exit before setting out.
From a forest-strip village to a mining and brickmaking center
Between 1160 and 1240, Niederwürschnitz developed as a two-row forest-strip village. One interpretation traces the name Niederwürschnitz back to the river name and the Slavic word “Virsnica,” translated as “fish weir stream.”
Coal was discovered on the border of Niederwürschnitz in 1844. Over the following three decades of mining activity, a total of 45 shafts were sunk in the fields. Clay deposits also played a role alongside mining, contributing to the growth of the brick industry in Niederwürschnitz. The town’s history thus brings together early settlement, mining and brickmaking, without reducing its different eras to a single attraction.
St. John's Church and the Christmas Mountain
Construction of St. John's Church began in 1903 under Leipzig architect Paul Lange; it was consecrated on September 26, 1904. The church is a Neo-Gothic brick building whose decoration and furnishings combine elements of Gothic, Romanesque and Art Nouveau styles. Its twin tower is just under 50 meters high. The altar area contains a unique wooden baptismal font; the furnishings also include a large Romantic-style organ. The church was repaired between 1945 and 1951.
Another cultural and historical highlight is the oriental mechanical Christmas Mountain. Its 48 scenes depict the life and work of Jesus in the Holy Land, with carved and painted wooden figures arranged across an area of about 25 square meters. The landscape and buildings are based on illustrations from Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld’s Picture Bible. The display and the association connected with it have a history spanning more than a century.
Old Brickworks and events throughout the year
The Old Brickworks leisure grounds include a playground, a miniature golf course, a narrow-gauge railway, and a brick and village museum. The annual calendar includes the Pellkartoffelfest in August, which brings visitors to the Old Brickworks, where potatoes are freshly prepared. A Christmas market takes place in December. Check event dates and programs before your trip.
Cycling route and trip planning
A route description published in 2011 mentions the 18-kilometer Würschnitz Valley Cycle Route, which passes the Old Brickworks between Klaffenbach Moated Castle in Chemnitz and the Oelsnitz outdoor pool. The same description mentions a 34-kilometer circular route that connects the Würschnitz Valley Cycle Route with the former District Cycle Route 6 and the Iron Road, and leads to Klaffenbach Moated Castle. The two descriptions differ in both length and route type: one is described as 18 kilometers long, while the other is a 34-kilometer loop. Check the route, signage and infrastructure when planning your current trip.
