Discover Crottendorf
Accommodation in Crottendorf
Crottendorf offers a range of options for planning your trip: the Zschopau Valley Cycling and Hiking Trail runs through the village, the Otto-Peuschel Höhenweg offers scenic views, and Erzgebirge incense cone craftsmanship takes centre stage at the Crottendorfer Räucherkerzenland. You can therefore shape your choices around the route, the landscape views, or hands-on experience with traditional crafts.
Along the Zschopau
The Zschopau Valley Cycling and Hiking Trail passes through Crottendorf along a former railway line beside the young Zschopau. Signposted connections lead to local hiking destinations and sights. In addition to the route along the former railway line, the marked connections are therefore useful points of reference. Trail conditions and signage can change; check both before setting out.
A high-altitude trail with views of Crottendorf
The Otto-Peuschel Höhenweg near Liebenstein is approximately two kilometres long. From there, you can enjoy views towards Crottendorf, the Fichtelberg, Bärenstein, Schmiedeberger Spitzberg and the Erzgebirge ridge. How far you can see depends on the weather and vegetation. This makes the Höhenweg different in focus from the Zschopau Valley Trail: here, the approximate trail length and the named viewpoints are the main features, while the other trail follows a former railway line and has signposted connections to local destinations. If scenic views matter to you, take changing weather and vegetation conditions into account when planning your trip.
Incense cone craftsmanship at the Crottendorfer Räucherkerzenland
The Crottendorfer Räucherkerzenland combines a museum with hands-on activities: the museum is housed in a 15-metre-high replica incense cone, and workshops let you make traditional Erzgebirge incense cones yourself. A museum visit and creating your own incense cones offer two different ways to explore the subject. Advance booking may be required for workshops, so check availability beforehand if you plan to make incense cones.
The Erzgebirgskreis as a wider travel destination
The wider Erzgebirgskreis travel destination has a signposted hiking network of around 4,500 kilometres. The Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. In the Erzgebirgskreis, Seiffen is considered the cradle of Erzgebirge folk art and offers another regional perspective on craftsmanship.
In the spa town of Seiffen, the Erzgebirge Open-Air Museum showcases historic buildings and workshops from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The centrepiece of the museum is the original, preserved Preißler turning workshop, powered by water. Compared with the Räucherkerzenland in Crottendorf, the focus here is on historic buildings, workshops and the preserved turning workshop. Both offer a perspective on Erzgebirge craftsmanship, but each has a different emphasis.
Panoramic trails and ridges in the Erzgebirgskreis
The landscape examples also belong to the wider Erzgebirgskreis travel destination. The Schwarzenberg Panorama Trail is a 13.8-kilometre circular hike along the heights around Schwarzenberg and takes about 4 hours and 5 minutes. Panorama trails around the mining towns of Schneeberg, Schwarzenberg and Zwönitz offer views of their historic town centres. The Fichtelberg near Oberwiesenthal is 1,215 metres high and the highest mountain in Saxony. These regional details complement Crottendorf’s local trails with further landscape and cultural perspectives in the Erzgebirgskreis.
