Jübar offers two distinct points of interest for a stay: its church and its ancient lime tree. In the wider destination of the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district, routes, landscapes and cultural sites add to the range of things to explore.

Church and Landmark in Jübar

Jübar’s church was built in the 13th century in four construction phases. Its current tower dates from 1899. This means that several medieval construction phases and a tower from a considerably later date are found in the same building.

Near the town centre stands a lime tree around 1,000 years old, regarded as a landmark of Jübar. The church and the lime tree represent different time scales: the church has documented construction phases and a date for its tower, while the age of the tree is an estimate.

Hiking and Cycling

Lüdelsen Lake is an artificial lake in the Wismar Forest and a destination for hiking and cycling. The lake and forest are part of the local landscape, with walks and bike rides among the activities mentioned.

In the wider destination of the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district, the nearly 500-kilometre Altmark Circular Route passes through forests and meadows and by numerous brick and fieldstone churches. For long stretches, the route runs close to the “Green Belt Germany,” bringing nature, history and culture together.

The Altmark Circular Route comprises ten stages with different surfaces, including asphalt, concrete trackways, surfaced field and forest paths, sandy farm tracks and quiet roads. When planning, the changing terrain is therefore a specific point of comparison in addition to the number of stages.

Culture and Nature in the Wider Destination of the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel District

In the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district, visitors can experience everyday life as lived by the Lombards at the Langobardenwerkstatt Zethlingen and take part in hands-on activities: baking, making pottery, and using bow and arrow. These different activities offer insights into a range of crafts and aspects of daily life.

In the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district, the Drömling offers well-maintained cycling and hiking trails, observation towers, information centres and guided nature-watching tours. Facilities and programmes may change; check the latest options when planning a specific tour or visit.

The architectural and cultural history of the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district is also diverse: the abbey church in Arendsee is considered the oldest fully vaulted brick building in northeastern Germany. Of the more than 200 megalithic tombs that once stood in the Altmark, 40 remain in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district and eight in the Stendal district. The “Western Altmark Megalithic Route” is part of the European cultural route “Megalithic Routes.” In the Hanseatic town of Salzwedel, in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district, medieval architecture, half-timbered houses, cobbled lanes and brick churches shape the town centre. A walk along the 1,850-metre-long town wall reveals parts of the medieval castle complex, gates and towers.
