Discover Rohrberg: Village Church and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Rohrberg
The village church is a specific cultural landmark in Rohrberg. It is one of the few village churches on the Romanesque Road. As part of the local “Open Church” programme, it can be visited from Easter to October; confirm seasonal access before your visit. The building is also used for concerts and exhibitions.
The wider municipality of Rohrberg offers visitors two lakes, megalithic tombs and churches. In addition to visiting churches, there are opportunities to explore nature and culture. The municipality thus offers various points of interest for planning your trip, while the village church provides a specific connection to the Romanesque Road.
Culture and Landscape in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel
In the wider destination of Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, the Altmark Circular Route runs for almost 500 kilometres through forests and meadows and past numerous brick and fieldstone churches. It comprises ten stages with different surfaces, including asphalt, concrete trackways, paved field and forest paths, sandy agricultural tracks and quiet roads. For long stretches, the route runs through Altmarkkreis close to the “Green Belt Germany”; it links nature, history and culture. When planning, it is worth considering each stage together with its surface rather than assuming the entire route has a uniform surface.
The megalithic tombs can also be viewed in a broader regional context. Of the more than 200 megalithic tombs formerly found in the Altmark, 40 remain in Altmarkkreis Salzwedel and eight in Landkreis Stendal. The “Western Altmark Megalithic Route” is part of the European Cultural Route “Megalithic Routes”. These figures and the route provide an overview of the megalithic tombs in the region.
The Hanseatic town of Salzwedel offers an urban contrast to Rohrberg’s village church: its town centre is characterised by medieval architecture, half-timbered houses, cobbled lanes and brick churches. A stroll along the 1,850-metre-long town wall reveals parts of the medieval castle complex, as well as gates and towers. This means that different forms of historic architecture coexist in Altmarkkreis—from Rohrberg’s village church to Salzwedel’s town centre and its wall.
At the Langobardenwerkstatt Zethlingen, visitors can experience the everyday life of the Lombards and take part in practical activities such as baking, making pottery, and using a bow and arrow. This offers a different focus from visiting a historic building: history is also conveyed through hands-on activities.
At Lake Arendsee and in the surrounding area, tourist activities on the lake include swimming, sailing, surfing, fishing and boat trips. Altmarkkreis thus complements its cultural and historical attractions with a range of activities on the water. If you are planning a specific activity, check the conditions in advance; individual operators’ offerings and the relevant conditions may change.
