Gardelegen offers a variety of ways to spend your time: ramparts and traces of the past, churches, the Feldscheune Isenschnibbe Memorial, and opportunities for exercise and leisure. If you’re looking for a hotel in Gardelegen, first consider which topics interest you during your trip. This will help you plan your time around the city’s history, remembrance, or routes and activities.

Ramparts, walks and bike rides

The rampart promenade forms a green ring around the old town and offers views of historic buildings and the moat. The ramparts were restored in keeping with heritage conservation standards between 2003 and 2007 and included in the statewide Garden Dreams network. The circular rampart walk is 2.7 kilometers long; allow about 45 to 60 minutes for the loop. Check local access options before your visit.

There is a foot-wading station by the ramparts, fed by the Laugebach stream. If you would like to use it, we recommend checking the information on site. The area around Gardelegen also includes fields, heathland, meadows and forests that you can explore on foot or by bike. Gardelegen is also on two signposted cycling routes in the Altmark: the Altmark Circuit and the Milde-Biese-Aland Cycle Route. Check the latest route details when planning your trip.

For a regional cycling tour, the wider Salzwedel district offers a broader perspective: the Altmark Circuit is almost 500 kilometers long and passes through forests and meadows, as well as numerous brick and fieldstone churches. It comprises ten stages with different types of surfaces, including asphalt, concrete trackways, paved field and forest paths, sandy agricultural tracks and quiet roads. The short circular route in Gardelegen and the stage-by-stage planning required for the regional circuit therefore differ considerably in scale and planning.

Churches and traces of the city’s history

Guided tours are offered at St. Mary’s and St. Nicholas’ churches. Both churches can be visited year-round, including the partial ruins of St. Nicholas’ Church. Since visiting arrangements may vary, it’s best to check the current options before you arrive. The remains of the former fortifications include the ruins of the Stendal Gate, the Salzwedel Gate and sections of the wall.

Guided city tours can be tailored to visitors’ wishes. They take in important buildings and squares and can also accommodate visitors with walkers or wheelchairs. Ask the Tourist Information Office about current availability.

Feldscheune Isenschnibbe Gardelegen Memorial

The memorial is located at the historic site of the Gardelegen massacre. It commemorates 1,016 concentration camp prisoners from many European countries who were murdered near Gardelegen on April 13, 1945. As an international place of remembrance, information and encounter, the memorial is dedicated to this history. In the wider Salzwedel district, it has a documentation and visitor center with a permanent exhibition that opened in 2020.

The memorial’s outdoor grounds are open to individual visitors and groups during the day; admission is free. Since access information and admission arrangements may change, check them before your visit.

Leisure and digital insights

Bürgerpark offers a wide range of play and sports facilities, including a skate park, a volleyball area, a boules court and fitness equipment. If a particular activity is important to you, check the information about the facilities on site.
