Tanne combines local history with trails through a landscape of colorful mountain meadows and idyllic stream valleys. When planning a stay, the spa park, local history museum and several circular trails offer different ways to explore the town.

Local History Museum and Traces of the Town’s Past

The local history museum in Tanne is a small museum that was established in former shop premises and officially opened on May 1, 1984. Visits are possible by request. Two large, original water wheels stand right next to the building. They are considered evidence of the town’s industrial past and provide a distinct historical accent alongside the museum’s exhibits.

The spa park adds a natural focal point to the town’s history. It opened in 1961 and is located on the north-facing slope of the Bode Valley. Covering around two hectares, it provides a habitat for more than 500 plant species. The park is a destination for day trips for both locals and visitors. Together with the mountain meadows and stream valleys, it offers a different impression of Tanne from the town’s historical sites.

Circular Trails with Different Time Estimates

A trail around the resort town of Tanne passes eight stops in total. In addition, two circular trails are described with their distances and walking times. The Tanne Harzer-Höhenvieh Trail is 9.4 kilometers long, with a stated walking time of 2 hours 40 minutes. Its difficulty level is moderate.

The forest educational trail near Tanne is shorter, at 4.2 kilometers, with a stated walking time of 1 hour 10 minutes; its difficulty level is also moderate. Distances, walking times and difficulty levels are estimates. The information boards cover the lives and work of foresters in the 18th century. The circular trail follows the foresters Johann Heinrich Cotta, Chief Forestry Officer, and Herr von Lengefeld. Herr von Lengefeld married a daughter of Friedrich Schiller. This gives the trail a historical focus, while the information about the Harzer-Höhenvieh Trail provides mainly its distance, duration and difficulty level to help you plan your time.

In winter, another option depends on snow conditions: when there is enough snow cover, groomed cross-country ski trails are available in and around Tanne. This seasonal condition is important if you are planning to include cross-country skiing in your trip.
